I would think that the NHL would try to conceal that they favor certain players but I guess not, this is just moronic.

During the sabres pre-game chat, Kevin Sylvester said that he believes the reason for the suspension was because Ross had to be helped off the ice. So I guess Kaleta should have embellished and laid on the ice bleeding. Kaleta is better than that, he got up, patched up, and continued to play.

If the shitbag Bettman had his way it would be. This is the kindler, gentler NHL

Due to not having access to the wonderful world of the interwebs, I am just finding out about this now...

GARY FUCKING DOUCHEBAG BETTMAN, FUCK YOU AND YOUR FUCKING DOUBLE STANDARDS!!!! Ovechkin gets a fucking warning and you suspend Kaleta for the same god damn fucking hit!?!?!?!?!? I hope your two corner stones of the modern day NHL, Crysby and Ovechdouche get fucked up in THE worse way humanly fucking possible. I want someone to 2-hand both of them right between the fucking eyes!!!!!!

Sure, Kaleta isn't known as agreat player by NHL standards or a great goal scorer. One would even go as far to say, we didn't lose much in the suspension. The reason I'm fucking pissed at this is because the NHL is so fucking bold as to show the world that they have 2 sets of rules in their league. One set for their fucking pampered little bitch babies, and another set for others that get their nose dirty.

Fuck you Bettman, Fuck you Daily, Fuck you Mike Murphy and every other cock sucker who had a hand in this ruling. You're a bunch of scumbags and I wish nothing but the absolute worse for you and your families in the coming future!!

I have not read any of the previous posts but seriously this double standard bull shit has to stop. Alex Douchebag Ovechkin is allowed to do what ever he pleases, he could kill someone and only get a warning. The NHL is staritng to get like the Ontario Hockey League where hitting hard results in a season long suspension.

On a big picture level, I can perfectly understand their reasoning.

On a bigger picture level, I wholeheartedly reject it, anyway.

I'm with Aaron on this one - until the league behaves consistently in regards to these matters, the players will do as they please and take the gamble. That being said, Ovechkin's hit on Kaleta and Kaleta's hit on Ross are, I believe, two completely different circumstances. NEVER EVER turn your back on a hit.

I guess what I'm more pissed at is the NHL has absolutely no regard for the blue collar player. Be it in today’s game, or in yesterday's game. I can think back to the ‘93 Western finals, Gretzky high sticks Gilmour and got nothing. Had it been Wendell Clarke sticking the great one or bumping him even as much as to finish his check, there would have been a tribunal and possibly an execution.

It's not even the fact that it was one of our players. I've seen countless times where the league has issued no further penalty on guys like Ovechkin in similar cases where they’ve considered him to be, "Playing hard", but yet would assess a penalty on a guy who may have lost an edge and took out a goalie or something along those lines. When the league's star players hit from behind, high stick, charge or board players, more often than not there is nothing done. That is what is driving me insane on this issue. The kid in Philly saw Kaleta coming so he turned his numbers to him. All I've been hearing from locals is that it was a dirty hit. Yes, I am not one for hitting from behind and hope to god players will learn some respect as to not take runs at guys when you see numbers. But the kid turned into the hit at the last minute. Not saying it resolves this issue making it ok if a guy gets nailed from behind, but if it were a guy like Richards, Ovechkin, Crosby or the such who were in Kaleta's shoes, he'd be tossed from the game, MIGHT be fined and that would be it. End of discussion. Richards is a classic case. He got 2 minutes for almost taking the head off of Myers. Nothing further.

It seems like the NHL will not penalize its stars out of fear of there being a riot. Fear not, NHL. That only happened once, in Montreal. (Rocket Richard, may he R.I.P.) It's ok to have standardized rules for ALL players.

The more I watch the hit the more I disagree with it being boarding, how is it boarding when the player is actually right up against the boards? I thought boarding was was actually purposely driving the guy into the boards.

Boarding is checking someone into the boards when they're facing it, basically hitting from behind.

I'm okay with the suspension on Kaleta for hi shit from behind on Ross, even though he turned away.

I'm not okay with the NHL's double standards.

I'm ok with the suspension, as much as I dont want to see Kaleta get suspended.

When he hits him, he raises up, and he doesn't break stride while going into the man. Ross could have been much more seriously hurt than he was. It's a bone head move on Kaleta's part, he's a tough player, but he has to know the difference between tough and dirty, and raising your body, and striding through a guy against the boards is just plain dirty. It's not hockey, it's not "old time" hockey, it's not anything that resembles hockey, it's a dirty play.

Why Ovechkin wasn't suspended I don't know, he again, strides through the hit, and drives the player into the boards. It was called right in the game, but the NHL did nothing to follow up. The only thing I can think of is that Ovechkin is a 1st time offender, where Kaleta has been warned several times by the league for his "questionable" hits.

Either way, both hits warranted suspensions.

OV is a first time offender because the league continues to dole out major and misconduct penalties to him, but never has the cojones to suspend a star player.

You know I agree 1000% with that, but at the same time, people don't go out to see Patrick Kaleta's they go out to see 50 goal scorers. As much bullshit as it is, it boils back down to sports being a business, and Alex Ovechkin is the golden goose for the NHL.

If Ovechkin had driven Vanek, or Roy into the boards, we may be talking 2 games, but he drove an agitator into the boards, and well, sadly guys like Kaleta just aren't very marketable to most fans.

I'm good with the suspension IF they also suspended Ovie. Whatever, it's done and over with. We'll have him back for the Montreal game. It just sucked losing both Kaleta and Gaustad in the same game. Hopefully the Goose will be back soon too.
