Nice jesture, don't get me wrong, but this is an areana (sports in general) where grown adults can and sometimes do act like 5 year olds.

His opinion is that sports figures shouldn't give items directly to fans, and if fans act like morons in the process, it's the player's fault.

It was so cute when Ryan went over to see if he was alright, and then gave him his stick after the game. Nice to know he was still thinking about him after a victory and a shutout. Classy as haleee, right there.

If Miller let's a goal in with under 5 to go in the game to ruin his SO I'd be willing to bet he doesn't give away the stick =P

I was wondering if the photographer snapped a shot right before the puck struck him. Talk about an action shot. I wonder if he got a shot of him skating over to give him his stick too.

Good article and interview. Great picture of the guy

and a blog entry confirms that he didn't get a photo of the puck coming at him

As the play approached I had just dropped my camera with a 300 f/2.8 into my lap and was bringing my other camera with a 70-200 zoomer up to my eye. I saw the puck coming and tried, unsuccessfully, to get out of the way.

What moved me more was the fact that as the final horn sounded he immediately skated over to hand me the stick, before his teammates could congratulate him on his shut-out win. Knowing that with a shut-out in the works that he was thinking about me really shows us the caliber of his character. The stick is a nice souvenir, but Miller skating over before accepting congratulations from his teammates is what I'll remember every time I look at it after the shiner fades. He almost made being hit in the face with a puck worth it. He has also made it hard for me to root against him when he suits up for the American Olympic Hockey Team in Vancouver.

He is also a pretty good photographer too

Life is filled with responsibilities, people may not like the fact they have to or are forced into taking them on, but none-the-less they do exist.
My opinionated view may not be liked, but these incidents of fans behavior have not been considered isolated for years now. Its always best to error on the side of caution. I take stock of his gesture, and even stated such, it was a very nice gesture. My underlying headshaking that I do through my words is to the fact that there is a way to do it while minimizing the potential for situations like this to surface.

I have been to plenty of sporting events and in every case where a fan was to receive a momento from one of the participants through security, this never happened. It is what it is.

Did the shot through the glass make it on Youtube? I missed it, as I was posting at the time!!

Thanks for posting it fly

I bet that dude is grateful that it wasn't someone other than a goalie who did that - it could have been much faster, and much more damaging!!

Ryan Miller IS the Buffalo Sabres.

Thomas Vanek, last season.

There's a difference, and a big one. You called someone a Nazi. Ice threatened to use Gestapo-like tactics to enfore the One Rule.

Big difference.
