Brodeur becomes American citizen

"NEWARK, N.J. - Teammate and fellow American Brian Rolston tried to put a little pressure Tuesday on New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur.

"I heard he's going to play goal for the U.S. team at the Olympics," Rolston said, smiling. "And if he tries to play for Canada, I'm going to turn him in."

Don't worry, Canada, there's nothing to be concerned about. Brodeur pledges to be standing on guard for thee, in a Canadian Maple Leaf jersey, at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

But he is now officially an American, as well as a Canadian."

Imagine the possibilities? Major LAWLZ!!!

Well I guess he had to if he wants to raise a family here.

Especially with him getting older he would have to apply for citizenship sometime since his work visa would expire soon enough after he retires from Hockey.

That's okay. I'd rather have Miller between the pipes anyways.

ESPN Reports that Devils goalie Martin Brodeur has become a United States Citizen today, I watched it on Sports Center.... but since he is an american citizen shouldnt he play for the United States Hockey team for the Olympics?

This probably just means he now has duel citizenship, meaning he can play for either team

Brodeur is still a Canadian citizen. In order for him to lose his citizenship, he'd have to formally file a letter of intention to renounce his citizenship with the Canadian government.

Brodeur wouldn't play for the U.S even if he could. But once you play for one national team, under IIHF official rules, you're ineligible to represent a different country, so it's a moot point really.

Exactly.

I remember when people freaked out over Pominville's decision to play for the US... That rule was mentioned so many times in discussions about it that it got borderline ridiculous.

That is why Heatley cannot play for Germany. He only plays for Canada, since he was raised there anyways.

Heatley could have been this generations version of Uli Heimer had he elected to play for Germany........

I don't want him to play for team USA... Miller is better and more reliable at this time...

He's not allowed to play for Team USA anyways.

IIHF rules disallow it.

He was probably sick and tired of the paperwork required to work in the states as a non US citizen.
