A top 5 PK...if you look at the percentages associated with special teams in hockey, a top 5 penalty kill unit can stifle anybody they want to, whereas even a top 5 power play unit is still looking for a little bit of luck.

Top 5 PK, just because that prevents the goals from being scored.

If you're playing a great PK, that will in turn fire up your offensive production 5-on-5.

I'll go the other way. If you got a team with a great goalie who stops em all on 5 on 5, then take the good PP. 3 goals wins those games.

What's your take rut?

PK...then again, im more defensive minded to begin with.

Having a top 5 powerplay is ONLY good if you have a solid defense to make those power plays meaningful. it doesnt do you any good if you score on a PP only to give up a goal at even strength right after.

Right, that was my point. It depends on the team. If you got a sure-fire goalie, then a great PP wins you games just like you said.

I like the logic, but the Sabres are 3rd in PK and 20th in scoring.

A look at a couple of othe teams PK and PP:

Wash 1st pp, 19th pk
Pitt 28th pp, 9th pk
Bos 23rd pp, 2nd pk

I like the idea of having a good PK, but with a good goalie, your PK should be pretty decent. I would prefer a top PP. There have been too many times over the past two years I wish we could have declined the penalty because our PP has been so bad. We've had 120 PPs and have been short handed 95 times (third least in the league.) Maybe having a disciplined team has an influence on my decision to be better on the PP. Another note is that we have 3 short handed goals against and tied with Edmonton for being the only two teams with ZERO short handed goals for.

Wow. This is really, really weird. I was honestly thinking about this exact question last night during the game.

I'd rather have a great penalty kill. If you take a penalty, you're going to kill it off most of the time. This generates positive momentum.

Even if you have a bad PP, you'll score some of the time. And even if you don't, that's two minutes that the other team doesn't have a very good chance to score.

I explained that horribly. My answer was much more sophisticated in my head last night.

Here is a link concerning a 10 yr run on the numbers for the league. After reviewing the data, there appears to be a slight advantage to a stronger PP making a run deeper into the playoffs and competing for the CUP in the finals. But its not a huge difference between PP and PK averages for this.

The difference however, is what I've been saying all along, scoring = victory. Maybe not alot of difference, but a difference none the less.

Anyways, here is the link, enjoy:

The last chart there(for last year) showed that 5 of 6 top PP teams had clinched playoff berths, where only 2 of the top 6 PK teams had clinched. That tells a story, imo. Although the worst PK teams seemed to be the farthest from the playoffs. It seems the top teams have good PP, while the weakest have bad PK. Analysis: a good PK may get you in the playoffs more often, but a good PP seems to indicate a stronger team.

Miller will stop people for our PK, so a good PP will win games.

Dude your logic is dumb... Your saying that you will score a good amount of goals on the PP but on the PK the other team wont score a good amount of goals???

PK you will get scored on most of the time, but if you have a great goalie not so. PP will be really good for winning the game because you score goals... Which wins games.

Tough choice, but I'll go with PP. Here's my reasoning:

You want the other team to play cautiously. If they know taking a penalty is quite likely to end up in a goal against, then they won't want to take penalties. That in turn might cause them to start second-guessing themselves and not playing by feel. Also it might cause them to take it easier on your team physically and to not take liberties with your goaltender. A great PK on the other hand, doesn't seem like it would cause the other team to play cautiously in the same way.

Definitely the Power Play. Scoring = Victory! And Stuuuuuu and several others bring up great points on their merits. I want a team afraid to take penalties against the Sabres.

But then again, I want the fuckin Sabres to start scoring more goals ;)
