Something else that occurred to me was that he/she said the victim would be identified at 8pm EST specifically. Assassin was an hour late, so maybe he/she is in the central time zone?

If I take each letter in a numbered box, starting with across, then moving on to down, I come up with this:

I'm not sure if this is the right direction though, as the assassin said we had to have every word correct. Since apart and aloof both start with A, then it wouldn't have made a difference.

And seeing how the assassin said we had to have every single word correct, there must be another approach.

for the cross word, if it was just to fill in the blanks then whether the answers were right or not wouldnt make much of a difference.

it would have to do with the actual words used in the puzzle. either the clues or the answers.
