Habs put Halak on trade market

"The Montreal Canadiens are actively shopping back-up goaltender Jaroslav Halak.

Sources told Sportsnet that the Canadiens would need a top-six forward to part with 24-year-old Slovak netminder who is 6-4-0 with a .907 save percentage and 2.80 goals against average in 11 appearances for the club this season.

According to La Presse, the St. Louis Blues and Detroit Red Wings are among the teams that may be interested in acquiring Halak's services.

Halak would be a solid trading chip for the Habs as he is stuck behind Carey Price in Montreal and has a bargain-priced salary at $775,000. However, Halak is set to become a restricted free agent this summer."

As a promising 24 year old looking to get more playing time, it seems very unlikely to me he would be a fit in Buffalo. Can't see it.

But I guess the question is where could he expect to be a starter? I hear the Islanders are short on goalies.

Detroit, for one, and they could also use a long term solution.

Detroit has Jimmy Howard, who seems to be doing very well.

Halak really doesn't have a market for himself right now. I'd love to see him in Buffalo but he wants starting minutes and that just isn't gonna happen here.

Howard is playing well, but he's effectively a rookie. I know Irony is a Detroit guy, so there is more than a little bias there proclaiming he'll soon surpass Ryan Miller as the best American goalie.

He's played what, 15 games?

i watched him in grand rapids last season a ton... i watched him play for the wings in stints in seasons past, and i watched him when he started for the maine black bears.

he is in the same mold as miller. i see many parrallels between miller in 05-06 and howard of this season.

and im not a detroit hockey guy.

Halak, as my favourite goalie not named ryan miller, would fufil one of my dreams if he became a sabre

Having watched Halak, with the Bulldogs, I always thought him to be a more level-headed and mature goalie than Carey Price.

Not as flashy and volatile - But, very, very solid. A long-term investment that watches others come and go, and just keeps playing his game.

Meh, little too much for a guy who would just be a backup here. Darcy doesn't trade in the division much anyway. I'm not holding my breath.

I agree also. a Top 6 for a backup goaltender on most teams right now.

To play throw it out there, what if that top 6 forward's name was Clarke MacArthur, or Drew Stafford?

You'd be giving up a RFA for a RFA, saving $ on the cap now, and perhaps later. And, you'd be filling a hole for Buffalo on paper while onloading an asset in a position you're relatively deep at.

This. I remember watching him a few years ago and thinking he would be the next big thing in Montreal.

When price was shitting the bed this season, Halak really stepped up his game. As much as I think he would look good in our net, what we may be giving up in return would come back to haunt us. Daniel Paille almost did just that in our game against the b's this season.

I think tonight's game will be somewhat of a test to see how patty responds to his "conditioning" stint in the "A". It may take the game tonight, depending on how well Patty plays, for Darcy to see how our goaltending situation is shaping up going into the xmas break. Hoping for a solid outing for him tonight, we'll just have to wait and see.

Howard doesn't look good enough to surpass Miller. Not in my eyes. He is good though.

eh well. its a possibility. i see no flaw in howards game.

he did break two of millers NCAA records, including save percentage in a season (.954) and goals against average (1.19)

those numbers are fucking absurd.
