Just watching the Flames intermission and the were saying shoouts areup from 56% last year to 72% this year. I personally hate the shootout and I hope it goes away because the way teams get points today is a complete joke.

i disagree. the shoot outs are fun to watch. sure, it can be seen as a cheap point that de-emphasizes team work and all but its much more exciting then never ending overtimes and ties where each team gets a point.

In a perfect world every game would be over in regulation and OT wouldn't exist because every team would end the game, but it's not. And it is unreasonable to think they could do continuous OT in the regular season. You would have so many players injured or scratched because of terrible fatigue night in and night out.

This system works, the points could be taken away and they could just go with some sort of win/loss for standings.

If you want to force teams to skate hard the whole way through a game, take away the 1 point for a loss.

In a tie game, teams will buckle down defensively in the last 3 minutes to get the point, and go for the extra marker in overtime.

If you take away the single point, they'll be skating their assess of right until the end.

Yep. When you can no longer turtle and 'steal a point' on the road, the game will open up much more.

Fortunately the Sabres are in no way part of the reason for the increase in that percentage.

I feel like we're never in shootouts anymore. A few seasons ago, it was at least every other game.

No, you would need to shorten the season by 10-20 games if you're going to have that. Too many team would end up crashed and burned, and the parity between teams would be so close without a pity point or no points at all.

I mean they are close now, imagine how close they would be if they didn't have a pity point or a point for OTs.

I don't agree with ties in any type of sport EVER.

You need some sort of win/loss method in a sport like hockey. Just take away all points so wins count only. You have a winning percentage like in football, baseball, and basketball. No need to worry about points, and then teams will try harder because there are no points anymore to get, only wins and losses.

In OT, I agree with 5-on-5 OT until a winner is found though, no matter how long it may last.

How about we just have 60 minutes with each player form each team just taking shots on the other goalie, screw the game, the Shootout is what draws people in, might as well make it a full 60 minutes and whoever amasses the most goals wins.
