Wow, Mancari...well, he has played well for Portland, and has shown a willingness to play more physical, too. Let's hope this off season was a reality check and now he'll be willing to play the power forward position we desperately could use.

I like this.

Guarantee we use him on the point on the powerplay, but I would rather have him screening the goalie and taking Gaustad's role until he is more NHL experienced.

Hard to tell... he barely saw the ice. Ruff only played 3 lines for the most part.

Did not get much ice time, but when he was on the ice, I wasn't too inspired - slamming his shot into the defender when on the power play from the point - he's been watching tape of Pomminville on the point.

That being said, we have had other Portland guys look poor in their first game or two up - might just take him a game or two to adjust, or he could suck his entire career at the NHL level  . Not enough game time to judge for sure, in my book ;) .

He couldn't have been watching tapes from Pominville. I mean, he hit something that wasn't the boards.

In spite of his 100 mph shot, Mancari's a dud. A bad pick, who won't go much further because he's either run out of steam, doesn't have his head on straight, or isn't willing to give what it takes because he's already plateaued and thinks that he's made the "Big Time" and doesn't have anything more to learn, or doesn't need to work any harder.

Dud. His holdout says it all. Arrogant idiot.

i have no qualms in him getting the call up if its not for a long period of time on the bottom two lines... i guess i refuse to believe that a kid this huge with his skillset is a 100% complete bum.

Per WGR:

Quote:
Mike Grier is back with the team after coping with the death of his mother. With Grier back, Mark Mancari has been sent back to Portland.

wow, shocker...

lol, I'm glad he's back down, he's not really much of anything. Not a power forward, not a grinder, not an accurate shot to be a sniper. He's just a body, with a hockey player inside somewhere...

I wish he would have become something, but after 5 years in the system, he's just nothing.

IMO, this was Mancari's last chance. Only one game, sure, but from what I've heard, he showed nothing, and got called up over Ennis -signaling that the FO was giving him one more chance to prove himself. He didn't. Period point blank.

I was surprised. Usually when they know they have one big shot...they hustle all niight. He floated most the time though. So uninspired. I don't ever want to see him in a Sabres uniform again.
Glad Mike will be back.
Anyone know if Gerbe will be back. He seemed like a gametime decision against the Rags, so I hope he is back.

How could anyone glean anything from the few short minutes he played?

I wouldn't base anything on last night. Lindy shortened the bench so he wasn't going to play much anyway. He didn't impress, but didn't look like a pansy either. I think some comments here are just a result of the last few call-ups.

He could very well turn out to be a dud, but why should we have expected him to play like a total stud last night? Did some of us want to see him making flying checks like Kaleta, or be in the exact right spot to let his PP one-timer fly a-la Kotalik?

No player plays to their potential on the first, second, or fifth game after a call-up. I've never seen it on a Sabres team anyway. Ennis had a few decent games, picked up a fairly lucky goal, but clearly needs to put on some pounds and I'm certain he has more to offer than what he showed. I'd like to say the same for Gerbe aside from his even smaller stature. Kennedy went all through camp, made the club and it still took him two weeks before he started to break out of a timid playing style, and he still has a ways to go and get stronger.

I think we would have had a definite answer on Mancari by the end of this season except for the hold-out. Like it or not, but that dumb decision has little to do with how good of a player he'll be. He may very well have been a victim of greedy advice form his agent, and his comments about the hold-out show he learned something. After missing all of camp he probably won't have a realistic shot to prove himself once and for all until next fall. I'll reserve a final judgement until then, but I wouldn't bet on him.

Because all the other players I see trying to make it in the NHL, are hustling there asses off every second they are on the ice. Mancari didn't even throw any checks. Even Gerbe is throwing checks around!
Especially once he knew he wasn't going to play a lot, he should have been out there moving his feet, taking shots, and throwing his body around. All I seen was him floating, and the only time I remember him touching the puck, was on the powerplay when he slapshoted the puck right into the defender, and gave up a scoring oppurtunity.

Mancari was a 7th round pick, even if he doesn't turn out, it's not like we wasted a 1st on him.

I think the fact he saw such a lack of playing time explains it, within its' self. Lindy doesn't find him responsible, or reliable, therefore he doesn't play. If he doesn't have the coach behind him, he's not going to succeed.

I distinctly remember Mancari throwing a check against the near sidewall in the defensive zone during the 1st period. Either way players just don't come out flying on a call-up. They usually aren't real comfortable or sure where their supposed to be all the time. That makes them play and look a little quiet, but Mancari did some bumping and shoving during scrums after the whistle. I'm not saying he looked great, but some comments here just seem biased based on prior history.
