To compare what Gaustad has learned to be as a hockey player to what Kassian should be is, to be perfectly honest, an insult to Kassian. Gaustad began his career as a fourth line punching center, and has worked his way up to being a low-scoring third line center/faceoff specialist/special teams juggernaut. Kassian is a scoring/hitting power forward, a top-six brand of player. If Kassian even merely turns out to be as good as suggested, then he'll be far and away superior to Goose in all aspects (besides faceoffs and possibly the PK).

Comparing what Mancari could have been to what Kassian looks to already be is more accurate than to compare Goose and Kassian.

I can't wait for Kassian to be an NHL player. Those are going to be some VERY fun seasons of hockey for Sabres fans.

As far as Goose goes, he's just the ultimate traditional hockey player. The guy that is quite honestly not just maximizing, but surpassing his potential, due to a motivated, dedicated work ethic that is matched by few in the NHL.

I think Goose looks at a picture of the Stanley Cup when he wakes up every morning.

I hope like hell he can get it in a Sabres uniform, because a guy like him deserves it.

Very true, PSP. He was projected to never reach the NHL, and now he's an integral part of a team and a possible Olympic bubble player.

You know a guy is good when every season his point totals rise from the last (and in Goose's case, so do his PIMs ;)).

If you put your mind to something, you very well can do it and that is what Goose has done.

He was probably told he'd never amount to a NHL player his entire life and his attitude was like, "Watch Me."

and those are the guys you need on a team, those who want to prove they belong and prove they are the best.

This is why Gaustad is so well-liked and why he should be the Captain. Goose is probally our best player next to Miller, just with his drive, determination, and willingness to get the job done. He is a true leader, and deserves the "C". I don't see why he isn't already. He perfectly buys in to Lindy's "system", so Lindy should return the favor and make him the Captain. He is a real hockey player.

Well, when they were without a captain, Lindy let the team choose their captain, and they chose Rivet. There's a reason, though, that Goose wears an "A".

Rivet is the right choice for right now.

But when it's his time to move on, you can be sure that Goose will be wearing the C.

I don't mean to bash, but I hate Rivet as the Captain this year. He was good last year...but his play is horrible this year. He doesn't score, hit, or fight, and he gets beat 1 on 1 all the time. What good quality does he have?

Rivet is a man in all aspects of the word. He's not our most talented player, but he's the eldest that consistently brings his best effort.

He doesn't fight as much because it's tough to play with 5 defensemen. But when he needs to, he does. He's also still our most physical defenseman in front of the net.

I have seen Rivet right in the face of anyone in the crease, and I've seen that from alot of our defensemen not named Montador or Rivet now.

I've seen Myers get into the face of guys in the crease when the play is stopped, I've seen Tallinder do it, maybe not so much Sekera, but those other guys are protecting Miller and our Goalie in net because of what Rivet had always done.

Not only that, but his nasty habits he has (in the good way) when defending Miller or clearing the crease have rubbed off on Butler and Myers, such as those vicious little crosschecks in the blue paint to offending players.

Beat me to it! I was just about to post about those.

He's a mean guy in those situations, and I'm sure he's the one that's least fun for opposing forwards to crash the net against.

During their game against the Ducks last season, the Ducks announcers mentioned his crosschecks in the crease during their commentary during Rivet and Montador's fight, and I've watched for it ever since. He's a gnar customer, no doubt.

He was a good captain last year, because of our lack of leadership problem, but he doesn't deserve it this year. If he were a real leader, he would willingly take the "C" of his own jersey, and give it to Gaustad.

I wouldn't be surprised if he did next year.

But I still disagree. I think he's the right guy for the job right now.

I wish Goose would be back soon. He's ruining his chance at 20 goals. He's on pace for 16 in 55 games, which is over 25 goals in 82 games. I know he will probally slow, and will only get like 15-20 this year. I just want him to hit 20.
