My best friend and her boyfriend got engaged tonight, and I called every detail of the ring he got her because I was like, "lol I bet I know him well enough to predict this." So I did.

Cool story, bro. :P

1992 is like a magical land where the glitz and the glamor of the past met up with the irony and the postmodernism of the present. Life worth living went into a coma that year and was dead the next.

Basically.

I'm only half kidding.

I love this quote. It's GK Chesterton.

Quote:
But the new rebel is a Sceptic, and will not entirely trust anything. He has no loyalty; therefore he can never be really a revolutionist. And the fact that he doubts everything really gets in his way when he wants to denounce anything. For all denunciation implies a moral doctrine of some kind; and the modern revolutionist doubts not only the institution he denounces, but the doctrine by which he denounces it. Thus he writes one book complaining that imperial oppression insults the purity of women, and then he writes another book (about the sex problem) in which he insults it himself. He curses the Sultan because Christian girls lose their virginity, and then curses Mrs. Grundy because they keep it. As a politician, he will cry out that war is a waste of life, and then, as a philosopher, that all life is waste of time. A Russian pessimist will denounce a policeman for killing a peasant, and then prove by the highest philosophical principles that the peasant ought to have killed himself. A man denounces marriage as a lie, and then denounces aristocratic profligates for treating it as a lie. He calls a flag a bauble, and then blames the oppressors of Poland or Ireland because they take away that bauble. The man of this school goes first to a political meeting, where he complains that savages are treated as if they were beasts; then he takes his hat and umbrella and goes on to a scientific meeting, where he proves that they practically are beasts. In short, the modern revolutionist, being an infinite sceptic, is always engaged in undermining his own mines. In his book on politics he attacks men for trampling on morality; in his book on ethics he attacks morality for trampling on men. Therefore the modern man in revolt has become practically useless for all purposes of revolt. By rebelling against everything he has lost his right to rebel against anything.

In other news, it's 4:17 in the morning, and not only have I yet to prepare my answers for essay questions on a make-your-own final tomorrow morning at 9:30 (it's like Choose Your Own Adventure books, only... not), but I am not tired at all despite getting about four hours of sleep last night and every night before then to infinity (lol hello, impossibility in this universe). This is too normal. Dislike.

Final down...only took me about an hour; love essay finals...I LOVE them; would much rather write an opinionated final exam than memorize 50,000 facts and try to puke them back up on a multiple choice exam

Sorry. But I despise Chesterton and his smug elevation of dysfunction into a philosophy and an art-form.

He was a snide apologist and a moral coward who projected his own self-loathing onto all humankind.

He was an anti-hero. He believed in the inevitable failure and corruption and compromise of the human spirit.

Nuff sed.

Why does my favorite professor have to leave. I just took the final exam for his class. :(

He is so kind and gentle and gracious. It's far too rare to find those qualities in a person, together, and it's difficult to describe how genuine it is from him. ...And usually when those qualities are found, the one who possesses them is taken advantage of and spit on time and time again... I'm going to miss him. A lot of students just find him weird, but he reminds me so much of myself that I never possibly could. I just lack his best attributes... He is so kind, and based on various anecdotes he shared that applied to class coupled with the way he is, I hope that his children realize how fortunate they were to be raised by such a man as he. I wish him the very best.

 It's OK. I just like that quote. Found it on some random site. I've never read anything non-fictional from him but random quotes, devoid of the context of his entire philosophy. I read one of his books once, but it was a fictional story, not exactly a book that is nothing more than a collection of opinion essays.

It was -5F yesterday and snowing, and I saw a girl walking down the street with a flower in her hair - it struck me as peculiar.

Maybe she was going to San Francisco?
