The Buffalo Sabres took to the ice for a 25-minute skate this morning following their 2-0 loss the Ottawa Senators last night. However, several players did not participating in the workout, including several defensemen. Steve Montador, Tyler Myers and Henrik Tallinder were the three defensemen missing from the skate. All three were in the building but did not take to the ice. Patrick Kaleta was not on the ice after suffering a neck injury in the loss. Head coach Lindy Ruff said the forward is day-to-day right now.

Kaleta is suffering from what Ruff termed a real stiff neck and "vision issues." Several teammates spoke out about Jarko Ruutu's hit to Kaleta's head. No one was more vocal than captain Craig Rivet:

"It's coming from a player that has a background for that type of stuff. How he was not ejected from the game is beyond me...You look at on the replay it's just total blatant that he was going for his head, used his shoulder but they're [The NHL] trying to take that out of the game but I feel that they missed one last night."

When asked if Ruutu should have been ejected for the blow to the head, Rivet added, "guess he [Kaleta] didn't look hurt enough on the ice for him [Ruutu] to get kicked out." The blue liner also said the referees are "human" and do make mistakes.

Paul Gaustad will return to the lineup following three weeks in the press box with a knee injury. One aspect Gaustad can help out in is face-offs. That is one area in which the team has struggled. The center has won 64% of his face-off chances this season, by far the best of the normal centermen on the team.

Myers and Tallinder were two of the players suffering from food poisoning in the loss. Another was backup netminder Patrick Lalime. Ruff said he is still planning to use Lalime in one of the two games this weekend. However, Lalime told us that he will not start in goal tomorrow against the Maple Leafs.

The Sabres have back-to-back home games this weekend. Friday Toronto comes to town; while the Penguins take on Buffalo Saturday night.

Great. This food poisoning has forced Ruff to let lalime rest another day, so we'll be playing Patty against the Penguins.

Lets hope they can come up with some big games this weekend.

...they sure played hard enough, in spite of that. I tip my hat to the both of them.

Good to hear the Goose is back. We've missed him, dearly.

Glad to see Rivet speaking out on Rutuu's goonery.

That was exactly the type of hit that I'd love to see gone from the game. The league won't do fuck about it because it's Kaleta though.

I want someone to try and convince me that is was a 'good hockey play gone bad' , 'Kaleta should have had his head up', or any of the other bullshit arguments about why hits to the head should stay in the game.

...Ruutu's a multiple-offender! Regardless of whether he hit Kaleta, or anyone else, he should have gotten some serious time off.

The guy is a dangerous, reckless, irresponsible menace. He's really over the top, with this kind of shit. He's a fucking idiot, who's going to paralyze someone, one of these days.

Ruutu is such a piece of shit. I thought it was a clean hit he says. He cleanly hit the head if thats what he meant. I would hate to be PK, players can do whatever they want too him knowing the NHL won;'t suspend them.

I can't agree more, but just thinking of past precedent, the league tends to not do shit if the injured player isn't A list.

Ha that's what my dad said after Ruutu hit Kaleta....but of course, noone did anything...Gaustad was probally itching to go down there like crazy up there in the press box. You have to standup for your teammates....ridiculous..

If you think for a second that we have guys on this roster that could support a "brawl"; well we don't.

Our lineup that night was

Stafford-Roy-Mac
Pommers-Connolly-Hecht
Vanek-Kennedy-Grier
Ellis-Mair-Kaleta

Rivet-Lydman
Myers-Hank
Montador-Sekera

Of all those guys, the guys capable of fighting and doing some serious damage, Rivet...Mair...and maybe Montador, although when he fights it's a grab and clutch fight.

Say wat you want about the "toughness" of some of the guys on this roster, until we bench Matt Ellis in favor of Cody McCormick or Jeff Cowan we dont have a legit tough guy, and people will continue to take liberties with players like Kaleta.

When do we say enough with Matt Ellis who contributes 7mins of ice time a night, and scores fewer points than the three blind mice. I understand the game isn't all about stats, and that he's got great work ethic, but we're also talking about a guy who scored a career high with 12 points last year...12 freaking points. McCormick had 12 points last year, but adds that enforcer's edge to this team, that will prevent teams from taking these cheap shots on Kaleta, and heaven forbid Miller, or Vanek.

What's it going to take for us to wake up and realize that we are wasting roster spots for guys who "hustle", check that shit back in High School sports...give me a legitimate deterrent for running our players heads off the boards, over a hustle guy who scores 12 points in a career year.

I agree with Jay. I wanted to see Cowan in particular in the mix this year. Hell, there is no rhyme or reason to who scores on any given night, he might put in the occasional goal here and there.

I'm a big Ellis fan, but at this point, we're gonna wanna mix it up. McCormick and Cowan could be fitting fourth liners with Goose.

I think taking Ellis out of the equation, especially with goose coming back, would not be a good move.

If you want to add size to the lineup, bench Hecht, move Grier up off the 4th, and put Cowan out there with Ellis and Goose.

Ellis is too good at shielding the puck and continuing the cycle to take him out. Plus he is a pretty good skater.

That's true, but the logic here is Hecht will never ever get benched. I dunno.

Yeah....trying to be slightly realistic here. Hecht won't get benched.

True.

In that case, do nothing. Ellis deserves his spot over Cowan or McCormick.

I'm actually curious to see what response I get to this question.

What does Ellis do exactly that makes him so non-expendable?

12 points last year, +4. He doesn't kill Penalties, he's not a power play specialist, he's not strong with the puck, he's not an exceptional checker, and he doesn't fight.

What is his purpose on this roster? A 'character' guy?

Actually, he's very strong with the puck. But, other than that...

Goalllllll!

Ellis dominates. He generates way more momentum than we give him credit for.

Anyone remember the series of games he missed last season? This team looked like shit.

It always seems that when we call someone out, they play damn well. I like it!
