Chris is in the third year of a five year deal. He isn't a free agent, so there is not much point in wondering about picking him up for another 2 1/2 years.

The Sabres made a mistake letting him go and, I believe, Drury made a mistake in leaving (although maybe the $35 million he is getting argues against that). Sometimes a team and a player match up so that both are better for the combination. I think that is the case with the Sabres and Drury.

The Rangers must be disappointed that he hasn't been the player in NY that he was in Buffalo.

Its kinda like having an old boyfriend that was great, but you broke up for stupid reason...then you get back together and the magic is gone. I don't think it would be the same..

For the right price i would take him back. Would have to be at a reduced salary though.

Oh, well, if we are doing ifs and buts let's sign Ovechkin and Crosby.

There was a time when I would have readily joined in the consensus on this thread about Dru.

But, I look at at our recent troubles in the faceoff circle {the PIT game was a prime example}, and think differently: say what you want about Drury, but he was always a reliable faceoff man . . . of late, only Roy and occasionally Goose have been reliable in faceoffs, it seems.

I'd take Drury back -- at a reduced salary, of course -- for just that reason. For all the talk about the need for us to improve the GF stat, that starts with puck possession . . . and puck possession starts with winning the draw in the first place.

Oh, and for those saying how they wouldn't take back someone who bolted from town in search of big bucks at the first opportunity, and {either directly or indirectly} slammed the organization on their way out, I've got two words for you:

1. Mike
2. Grier

:D

I believe the question was IF we would TAKE BACK someone who ONCE played here [Drury] -- not someone who NEVER played here [Ovie or Crosby] . . .

I'd take him back, give him a 1 year deal to start and go from there (if we like him again ;) )

I don't know...it'd be nice but not at the price he is at now. I don't think he'll ever be as great in New York as he was in Buffalo.

I'd say no, we don't really need him right now, especially with all of our centers under contract for a bit.

I'd rather go for a younger guy, or picks because with picks we stock up the farm and eventually we can pick a superstar on offense for us in the draft like we did with Myers.

Would I take Drury back if he begged to come back, Possibly on the second line with Roy or connolly on first line and one of those two on wing with Drury, but he would need to come back for 3 million or less with what he brings now.

No. Inasmuch as I still have that warm and fuzzy feeling for the 06/07 team, he left us to play for his childhood dream team. Great memories. That's what the past is all about. Every time I see any team score a clutch goal in the last 10 seconds, I still call it "A Drury Goal." Yeah, I miss those days. July 1, 07 was the second worst day in Sabres history - ever.

That being said, a traitor is a traitor no matter what fault management had in the deal that wasn't. He can keep sucking in NYC. I hope he's happy thinking his dream team will win it over chemistry cause now he doesn't have either. I followed him since his Calder nomination in 99 with Av's team mate Hejduk. I was a Drury fan long before he came to Buffalo.

I don't know. Sure his leaving left a bitter taste in your mouth, but I wouldn't rule it out entirely if it looked to help the team. If he came at a discount price, and I mean way discounted, I would consider it. Around 2 mil or less for a short term. Make him a 2nd or 3rd line center. I think he might be past his prime, so there's no way I'm taking on anything remotely like his current contract if I'm a GM. But all that is assuming there won't be some kind of chemistry problem. But I don't think the players in the room harbor the same feelings of betrayal that the fan base does.

His departure and bitter taste? Yes.
The infamous Ottawa game? There isn't a fan here that cant say that wasn't one of the most passionate Sabres games of this decade.
I still get melancholy watching that vid and can't part with this pic:

Partially due to it beings Marty's last game (suited up?). That almost seems like the good ole' days and yet it was just yesterday.

What makes you think the players don't harbour the same feelings of abandonment?

Probably because 95% of them would jump ship for a fat contract. I don't think most players harbor much loyalty to a particular team, so why would they get their ire up when a teammate does what most of them would do in a similar situation?

I'm getting a little emotional just thinking about this.

He's in the past now - the memories are still here, though.

Amazing win for us for sure, and without him we wouldn't have tied that game.

He was great with us and all, but he did leave for his boyhood team. Everyone of us would have done the same.

I would love to play for the team I grew up watching. Lets hope Myers doesn't evver want to go to Calgary then too.

Thanks. Good point to ponder. I guess it's just that side of me, were I am unique in the fact that I am loyal. It's hard for me to hate on him when I respect him as a SABRE so much. Then again, I don't make 5-7 million dollars a year. On the flip side, it equates to money meaning more to him than the Cup. We beat the Rags that year only to see him jump ship.

Believe me, I hold a special place in my heart for the 06-07 team. Drury was truly Captain Clutch. I hold a place in my heart for the 99 team too ;)

I won't even go back to the 76 Cup because only 6 people here remember it :D
