Also, damn the plot and writing. Damn the fact that Cameron outright stole the whole fucking concept, imagery, and characters from a novel in the '50's (yes, he really did). It looks fucking GORGEOUS.

what novel?

the plot is more or less Pocahontas. the imagery, while breathtaking, is the same stuff you see in most fiction worlds. same thing with the characters. the native princess who likes the new guy, the hot shot native who doesnt trust him, the new guy/hero who catches on fast, and a couple old people who offer moral support to everyone. again, standard fiction stuff.

the thing about avatar is that, from what i can tell, no one went in expecting to get mind fucked by the script. i mean, this is the guy who wrote "ill be back." not real riveting stuff there. the main draw for avatar is the visually stunning 3 hr orgasm thats on the screen. and believe me, it is a visual orgasm.

From a technical stand point. this movie is arguably the biggest development in movie making since Lord of The Rings. Cameron developed a new camera that shoots like the human eye as well and live CGI motion capture. by that i mean that when they were doing the motion capture, instead of getting the skeleton and laying it over the live action like normal they have the actual CGI character on the monitor for Cameron to watch that can interact directly with live people. meaning he can direct the CGI the same way you would a live person. in addition they did a different type of motion capture on the face that allowed the cameras to pick up 95% of the facial movements of the actors :o .

Novella, actually...Poul Anderson's "Call Me Joe".

Read about it here

Me and 2 friends saw it in Imax 3D opening night. The movie is BEAUTIFUL. The world it creates is just so believable. My friend was mad we were there and had 0 expectations for the movie and he came out loving it just like me. Best movie I've seen in a while, go see it!

Avatar is now the second highest grossing film of all time, making $1.14 billion worldwide. James Cameron's latest movie is now second only to Titanic, also directed by Cameron.

Not bad for a couple of drive-in movies (I mean that as a compliment).

I guess it is safe to say that he can make any movie he wants to at this point.

Isn't Avatar still in theatres? It'll break Titanic's record if it has the longevity.

Good lord, it was so beautiful. I can't wait for the next one.
