Say what you will about him being a product of the system and what not, but it's still a great accomplishment.

Look, I certainly think him playing in NJ all those years played a role in his HoF career, but you can't deny the guy is something special.

But really, what a great accomplishment. best goalie of all time? I am not sure....there are different circumstances that could change a lot of things...definately top 3.

Never forget that duel that Hasek and Broduer had in Game 6 of '94 playoffs. And Martin was a rookie!

I was wondering also that Martin's record was helped by playing in a defensive system for most if not all of his career. That, and having guys like Scott Stevens, Scott Neidermayer, Brian Rafalski, and Colin White in front you I'm sure helped.

Ken Daneyko kept dudes out of your grille too.

Anyways, this ain't about him being the best. It's about him being shutout king.

Exactly, but how many shutouts would he have had playing for a more offensive minded coach?

I'll say 103  j/k

Very seldom have I ever seen him lose his cool or seem to play the cocky role. He comes to the game to play. He's modest and regardless if he lets in 5 goals or gets a shutout, his attitude never changes. The guy has been a nightmare to play against but you can't take away that he is maybe the best goalie of HIS era. The 80's had Fuhr, Vernon, McLean, Burke, Barrasso, a young Patrick Roy*, Moog, Ranford etc. The list goes on and on just as in the 70's; 60's and 50's and so on, had their own best of their era. I note Roy’s name, however, as I'm going to open another kettle of fish...

Out of the two (one which was a rookie and the other at the top of his game in the 90’s-2000’s) which would you folks say was the better of the two?

Roy or Brodeur?

How many records would Gretz have if Lindy put him on the 3rd line, and told him to play more defense??

Anyways, there's one thing about being successful that can't be denied. It's that people can throw all the "what ifs" around they want, but the fact is you still hold the record. Maybe if you traded him for Cujo way back when when STL was shell-shocked, he may have been crap, whilst Cujo went on to become sliced bread, but that's all speculation. There is NO way to assume he wouldn't haven't flourished in any other system. We may as well be talking aliens or religion right now, cause it's that subjective.

That's a completely different scenerio.
