Sabres hope to rebound against struggling Senators

"Sabres -- The steam coming out of coach Lindy Ruff's ears after the first period against Washington could have melted the ice at the Verizon Center, and not even improved play in the second period was enough to overcome one of the Sabres' worst starts of the season. Buffalo was outshot 15-4, trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes and never recovered.

"We didn't go to work," a steamed Ruff said. "If you play like that, you have no chance to win in this League. We weren't on the puck. We didn't compete for pucks. We just decided not to show up in the first period. It was shocking. I can't hide it."

Who's hot – Ottawa's offense has gone cold. Tuomo Ruutu* (wut?) has two goals in the Senators' last four games. … Buffalo's Derek Roy is 2-2-4 in his last four games and 4-8-12 in his last 13. Goaltender Ryan Miller has won two of his last three decisions and is tops in save percentage (.935) and second in goals-against average (1.99).

Injury report – The Senators lost their captain during Wednesday's loss in Pittsburgh when Daniel Alfredsson went down with a shoulder injury that he expects to keep him out for a few weeks. The Sens did get goaltender Pascal Leclaire and forwards Chris Neil and Shean Donovan back on Wednesday. No. 1 center Jason Spezza (knee) likely won't return until after the Olympics. … For the Sabres, Thomas Vanek (abdomen), Patrick Kaleta (neck), Chris Butler (ankle) and Nathan Gerbe (groin) all are banged up."

...ummmm* Tuomo is with that other scumbag team, the Canes. But we'll be looking forward *ahem* to "seeing" his lowlife, bottom-feeding, douchenozzle brother Jarrko, tonight...

A note of caution: Ottawa fares much better on faceoffs than this Buffalo squad.

Okay...so, knowing full-well that surnames (throughout the world) have an originating meaning, I ran "Ruutu" through the Google (Finnish-to-English) translator:

Ruutu = Box.

I couldn't make this stuff up, if I tried.

BTW: Chanting "Vittu Ruutu!" should do the trick. :D

December 26, 2009Sabres' morning skate linesThe Sabres have returned en masse from the Christmas break, practicing in front of hundreds of fans at the HSBC Arena morning skate. The lines:

Jochen Hecht-Derek Roy-Thomas Vanek
Tim Connolly-Paul Gaustad-Mike Grier
Clarke MacArthur-Tim Kennedy-Jason Pominville

Adam Mair-Matt Ellis-Drew Stafford

Patrick Kaleta and Nathan Gerbe are also skating, but it appears they will miss tonight's game against Ottawa while Vanek returns. More following the post-skate interviews.

...I'm taking an "even a blind squirrel" approach to this game. Sabres win, going away. A serious pounding.

Or, dere be lotsa 'splainin' to do, Lucy...and we'll be at each other's throats, like a pack of friggin' hyenas.

Soooooo true its scary!!!!

After the last two games, we could certainly do with something to cheer about from our team. Let's hope they do; I know the wings and beer will taste better if they kick some Ottawa ass tonight.

Conversely, if they can't beat a depleted Ottawa team, it will be a very - very sad evening.

I'm betting on the former.......

If we lose tonight, I will kill myself.

Good thing we won't lose. Let's go Buffalo!

I am not going to even look at the score of the game tonight until I know it is over. Why?

1) It's Saturday night, the only day of the week where we have a losing record.
2) My friend Charlie is coming over. I have been working on turning him into a hockey fan, but EVERY Sabres game I've ever watched with him (including the Classic) the boys with crossed swords have gotten beat. If they lose tonight then I'm giving up trying to convert him to hockey, because he is just plain bad luck for the Sabres.
3) It is the Sens and for some reason they own us, no matter what the difference in point total between our teams might me.

I'll peak in much later. Feeling very superstitious today.

I hope you don't jinx us there...you stated that in the Alfredsson injury thread in NHL Talk too.

Another nasty stat: The Sabres are 0 for 20 on the power play in the last 5 games and 3 for 49 in the past 13 games (6.1% efficiency.)

And Ottawa is 17-4-2 against the Sabres since Nov. 15, 2006, and has won five of six in Buffalo.

It don't get uglier than that...unless this team comes up with another excuse-filled "non-effort".

I'm glad Kaleta isn't playing tonight. I want him 100% certified healthy before he plays against them again. I don't want to risk them messing up his season for good, and I'm pretty sure they'd come hunting for him. Dirty.

I'd like to see Ottawa play Philadelphia in a cage match to the death. I don't think there's anyone on either team I would want to save.
