ST. LOUIS -- Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta, who returned to the lineup after missing three games, left the 5-3 victory over the Blues with a leg injury. Kaleta crashed hard into the goal post during the first period and played just 6:46.

He was walking with a major limp after the game.

"He may miss some time," coach Lindy Ruff said.

The coach said Drew Stafford was benched for lack of production. The forward hasn't scored in 15 games.

"It’s been a long time since he’s scored," Ruff said. "Sometimes you need to sit one to feel the pain, to say, 'I’ve got to dig in more.' He’s had some opportunities, it just hasn’t quite been good enough."

If the Sabres have depth, why would his injury be such a blow to us fans? :(

Hate that Kaleta is hurt. Sucks.

Good that Staff sat. Maybe it'll wake him up.

 WTF, poor kid just can't win. First he gets suspended, then gets a concussion and now probably sprained his ankle. I've also notice that ever since his suspension he hasn't been as effective because the second he gets near an opposing player he gets a penalty for just being Kaleta.... I've noticed he has toned his aggressive behavior down (although it has had some unexpected but great side effects, two shorties). I hope this will be the last of his injuries this season....

Up until last night, I would have benched Tim Connolly too but maybe Staffords' benching has made TC realize to actually do his job....Lets hope Stafford comes out pissed and scoring

This. And I'm STOKED that he benched Stafford to make him work harder.

Stafford is capable of doing a lot more, so I'm pretty happy to hear about that.

Kaleta being out again just sucks.

Stafford doesn't need to benched, he just needs a new perscription and someone to paint the net day glo orange.

I agree; he needs to be traded...he's just not a guy who fits in this system, he's not an overly strong back checker, his skating only shows up when he has the puck, he's not good along the boards, and he doesn't kill penalties, or add much to the power play.

Kaleta being out sucks, but at the same time we've got a lot of 3rd and 4th line guys, so it's not as big of a blow as Roy or Myers going down.

stafford was brought up too soon.. he can seriously play, but seems to have hit a wall in his development.

This. I don't know why, but he just disappears for loooong stretches. Guess he can't wait for his Hockey career to be over, so he can concentrate on his music.

Better selection of groupies, I hear...

Stafford has turned into Taylor Pyatt/Eric Rassmussen I think. Time to get whatever value you can for him and move on.

All he's gotta do is move his feet more, and he could be an animal.

He's very fast, especially for his size. He's got good puck control at those speeds as well.

It'll be a shame if he can't get his game going.

I'm one of the Sabres fans that bandwagon'd on from the playoff runs a few years back (infact, it got me into hockey), but Stafford is one of the few guys on this team I've noticed that has completely deked out several defensemen and scored. He's got some real talent, in this humble observers opinion, but doesn't seem to be able to pull that shit off at will.

Here's to hoping he can pull it together, or get sent somewhere he can for someone better suited for this team.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, he'd be a perfect fit in Florida, they play a slower, more controlled game than we do, and he'd be best suited for a game that doesn't get as vertical as some of the Sabres games do. When he has time with the puck, he's good, but he always seems to be about 1/2 a step behind when playing with most of our players.

Unfortunately, we're not getting anything of substance back from Florida, even though we'd all love Horton.
