Hiring your coach first, and GM second makes zero sense. (See the Cleveland Browns.)

Exactly. If we don't hire a competent GM, the choice of Coach is somewhat moot. The jackasses who play GM for the Bills are incompetent, to put it nicely.

putting it nicely wow thats a shock i would have just come out and said they suck large elephant testicles. even levy wasn't a good GM, he brought in whitner, kept modrak, and brought in jauron. jackasses doesn't even begin to explain it i'd say more like fuck heads.

i'll throw pollians name out there as well i was too young when he was with the bills but i have heard he got fired for yelling too much and wanting to do too much, but did the job.

Help wanted: Bills compiling new list of candidates
Posted: December 29th, 2009 | Jason La Canfora | Tags: Bill Cowher, Buffalo Bills, Dick Jauron, Jon Gruden, Mike Holmgren, Mike Shanahan, Perry Fewell

I spoke with someone with intimate knowledge of the situation in Buffalo who says that despite firing coach Dick Jauron weeks ago, the Bills have really not even begun their latest coaching search.

With all the “A” list coaches spurning them – Jon Gruden, Mike Holmgren, Mike Shanahan and Bill Cowher all declined — they are compiling a new list of candidates and will start a fresh wave of interviews after the season.

According to the source, a resolution is “a long, long ways away,” and the franchise is at the start of what will be a “very thorough process.” As expected all along, the Bills could look to several emerging coordinators, though there are few options on the offensive side of the ball. Buffalo would like to install an offensive-minded coach and explosive system, if possible, and is looking for someone who can identify and develop a franchise quarterback – which is why Holmgren, Shanahan and Gruden were so appealing.

Few “hot coordinators” are on the offensive side of the ball, however. In the meantime, Perry Fewell has coached on an interim basis.

Press conference today at 2:30PM at One Bills Drive. No one has any clue what it's about.

WGR had a report saying that Cowher was "impressed and interested" with the Bills...my eyes nearly bugged out of my head when I read it. I hope it's true

Bills expected to promote Nix to GM; will coach follow?

NFL.com Wire Reports
The Buffalo Bills are expected to promote Buddy Nix to general manager, NFL.com's Vic Carucci reports.

Russ Brandon, who was the team's chief operating officer/general manager, will serve as Buffalo's president and chief executive officer, Carucci reports.

Nix's experience
1993-2000: Bills area scout
2001-2002: Chargers director of player personnel
2003-2007: Chargers assistant GM/director of player personnel
2009: Bills national scout
Nix brings 16 years of experience in NFL personnel to the Bills' front office. Nix had worked from 2001 through 2008 as an assistent general manager/director of player personnel for the Chargers, where he had a close working relationship with Marty Schottenheimer, who served as coach of the team from 2002 to 2006. There is speculation that Nix's promotion could open the door for Schottenheimer to return to coaching and make the former head coach of the Browns, Chiefs, Redskins and Chargers a strong candidate for the Bills' open position.

However, Schottenheimer is on record as saying that he has no interest in returning to coaching. When asked about whether or not he'd have interest in coaching the Bills, Schottenheimer was unequivocal that he is done with coaching, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora is reporting.

Current New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, Marty's son, can also be expected to get strong consideration for the Bills' coaching position, NFL Network's Michael Lombardi reports, as the Bills are strongly considering a bright, young offensive mind to rebuild their team.

Nix and Schottenheimer remain very close, Carucci reports, as both were removed in San Diego in what was widely perceived as a power struggle with the team's general manager, A.J. Smith.

In January, Nix returned to Buffalo in 2009 to serve as a national scout for the team. In San Diego, Nix oversaw drafts that helped the Chargers compile one of the more talented rosters in the league -- including players such as LaDainian Tomlinson, Drew Brees, Quentin Jammer, Igor Olshansky, Michael Turner, Shaun Phillips, Shawne Merriman, Luis Castillo, Vincent Jackson, Darren Sproles, Antonio Cromartie and Marcus McNeill -- and become one of the league's perennial playoff contenders.

Schottenheimer has never coached for the Bills, but has roots in Buffalo, where he played linebacker for the team from 1965-1968.

It wouldn't be like cowher would have to move his family or anything drastic if he coached the bills. we are only 3 hours from pittsburgh. and less from the hamburg area. if cowher wanted to come back and coach. I would assume being close to the family and not having to move them much would be important to a coach and player.

This team is just going to recycle the same second-rate shit as a "New Beginning". It's all bullshit and we'll end up with a useless front-office with fading creds, and a coaching staff that has no proven track-record.

Another recipe for failure/disaster/mediocrity...This will not play out well. Ralph Wilson always goes back to the same pool of cronies. And it doesn't fucking work.

No one with any legitimacy wants to involve themselves with this ongoing trainwreck. And Ol' Ralphie won't cough up the Big Bucks, and then keep his goddamn paws out of the mix.

A Shanahan or Cowher or Holmgren does not need to be second-guessed by a petty and meddlesome old man. This organization is a joke, and just plain bad news, throughout the NFL.

I've been thinking a lot recently and saying this whenever people ask me about the future of the Bills. The next time you'll see a successful Bills team will be when Wilson is six feet under. (Not saying i'm looking for him to die but he has to for the sake of the franchise). (SOB needs to leave the team in his will to guys like kelly, thomas, Polian, Talley; or the team is going to the highest bidder whether that be Los Angeles, San Antonio, Toronto, etc.).

That's what I thought - isn't he from the area and is a college coaching legend down there?

I know he went to NC State as a player and was MVP, Captain and a great linebacker, but he started coaching in the NFL.

But he really is from Crafton, PA, it's near Pittsburgh. I think his wife is from Raleigh area and I know his kids go to school in one of the schools here.

Well him and his Wife both went the NC State, and in 2007 is when they moved to Raleigh. Guess the cold finally caught up to them.

I third this, and probably well over 100 years combined of being Bills fans can't be wrong.

I've explained this to people almost verbatim the way ice just did.

BILLS HAD 'STEALTH MEETING' WITH COWHER!

It's all over the Internet, including ESPN, NFL.com, and the various news outlets in Buffalo!

Read ESPN.com's story here - it seems to be the source of all the talk.

I heard it on the radio this morning that Cowher interviewed with the Bills.
