Being Balanced helps quite a bit, because a lot of the time the other team's top line can run with our top line and contain them, but when we start throwing out able 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lines it adds more fuel to our fire. Having 4 lines that could score at any moment is a huge threat.
I think the main reason that the line of Mair Connolly and Hecht worked so well is because you got three different types of players there. Mair creates room and energy, Connolly NEEDS that room because he loves to work the stick and make plays, and Hecht is pretty sound defensively and he has been fairly good on the forecheck lately and been getting the ugly goals in front.
That's pretty much what I was getting at. I'll use the Washington game we won as an example. We were successful in shutting down the line of Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin. As a result, Ovechkin got frustrated and was unable to put the puck in the net. No one else scored and we won 3-0 with goals from Tallinder, Gerbe, and Montador. Three guys who I didn't even think would have scored in that game, so what do you think the Capitals thought? However, in the next Washington game, we allowed Ovechkin's line to get going early and they got a goal almost immediately, which gives both that line and the team a confidence boost. That allowed them to trample us. When you're able to roll four lines that can get goals, the other team can struggle to find an answer.

If Miller and Myers were playing like they did last year, we'd probably be over 500 right now.
If I had decided to jerk off instead, I probably wouldn't be paying child support...
