This is an incredible story.

Quote:
One lucky boy in Canada can say without a doubt that he has his own personal guardian angel -- not of the spiritual kind, but of the furry.

An 18-month old golden retriever saved her owner from being attacked by a cougar in the backyard of their home Saturday in Boston Bar, British Columbia, located about 130 miles north of Vancouver.

The brave dog -- ironically named Angel -- leaped into action and threw herself between her owner, 11-year-old Austin Forman, and the wildcat that was charging at him while he collected wood from his family's backyard.

"I was really scared," Austin Forman told affiliate CTV News. "At first I didn't know it was a cougar. I thought it was another dog or something, but as soon as it went under the light, I saw that it was a cougar and I knew at that moment that I had to go inside."

With no hesitation Angel ran to protect her best friend.

"The dog obviously knew that something was up because she ran towards me just at the right time and the cougar ended up getting her instead," the boy explained.

Angel and the cougar fought under the family's deck, while the boy's frightened family called 911 for help. Fortunately a Royal Canadian Mounted Constable was in the area and able to make it to their home and kill the cougar quickly.

Despite receiving a few deep bite and scratch wounds Angel miraculously survived the attack.

"She had some pretty nasty injuries across the front of her head and neck" said Veterinarian Jack Anvik who is treating Angel at the Sardis Animal Hospital.

"If there had been enough time for the two of them together the cougar would have probably killed the dog," he told CNN.

CTV News reported the dog suffered wounds to her face, neck and legs, and her eye and underwent surgery for the wounds.

For now, Angel appears to be in good spirits while she recovers at the Animal Hospital.

"She's a golden retriever," Anvik said. "They're always happy.
"

I'm so happy the dog survived. This is a true reminder of what great friends to man they are.
