Quote:
Sports broadcasting will enter a new dimension in 2010 ... the third dimension, as ESPN will unveil the industry's first 3-D network.

ESPN 3D will showcase a minimum of 85 live sporting events during its first year, beginning June 11 with the first 2010 FIFA World Cup match, featuring South Africa vs. Mexico, ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer announced.

Other events to be produced in 3-D include the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, college basketball and football contests, up to 25 World Cup matches and the Summer X Games. Additional events will be announced at a later date.

"ESPN's commitment to 3-D is a win for fans and our business partners," Bodenheimer said in a statement. "ESPN 3D marries great content with new technology to enhance the fan's viewing experience and puts ESPN at the forefront of the next big advance for TV viewing."

ESPN has been testing ESPN 3D for more than two years, even showing a USC-Ohio State college football game in select theaters and to 6,000 fans at the Galen Center on USC's campus.

"This is a turning point for 3-D," Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro told USA Today.

Now's your chance to do something great for hockey Bettman. Winter Classic in 3D?

Unless they've invented a new hologram TV, yes.

X-Games 3D? I'm in! This is going to be sick!
As much as I hate the competition side of skateboarding. For me my skateboard is my paint brush, my creative outlet. I don't feel competition/espn/mtv should be trying to turn skateboarding into an organized sport, but watching skateboarding in 3D sounds amazing.

1980 3D, versus 2010, high definition, big screen TV 3D.

Hmmm....

Yeah but that's because it wasn't working properly scaled up to such a large television.

i hadnt heard a single thing like that. but, according to the press, the crowd was so displeased, they changed the screen back to HD in the third, to a huge eruption in the crowd.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent ... 50318.html

its a gimmick and the last thing id want to do is watch a hockey game with 3-d glasses on my face. if it came to that, or not watching the game at all, i'd do the latter.

There's a couple of reasons for that.

1. Who wants to wear 3D glasses at a live game? You don't need a 3D scoreboard when you can see it in 3D right in front of you.

2. The 3D image was working fine, but it wasn't properly tuned for a screen that big. For that reason, the motion was too extreme and caused nausea.

If you're at home, however, and they've properly tuned the picture so it's not overbearing like an amusement park ride, 3D is very enjoyable.

You couldn't say for sure whether or not you liked it anyways because you've never seen a game in 3D.

I loved avatar.

And the number of people that have gone out to see it suggests that 3D is definitely on the rise as a popular format.

How long ago did you see a 3D movie? The old red and green 3D glasses were horrible (as are most of the 3D movies). However, the new glasses are polarised, but not tinted, and most importantly, they don't give you a headache.

The earlier 3D movies focused on lots of shit flying at you. After the first couple of times it is just annoying. Cameron's new movie, Avatar, uses the 3D to make the movie more 'real' without trying to make the audience jump out of their seats.

I saw a 3D car race experience when I went to the Firecracker 400 in Daytona a couple of years back and visited an exhibit that had a 3D movie of a NASCAR race. Now, I don't give a shit about car racing (my brother likes it, so I went), but watching the short 3D movie of the race, including the tire changes in the pit, was better than watching the actual race.

I wish hockey would jump on this. This is exactly what is needed to get people into this sport. I am constantly trying to convince folks here in Florida what a great sport hockey is, but unless someone sees the game live first it is really difficult for non-hockey people to get into a televised game. 3D would change everything.

Agreed 100%.

Hockey is a game and 3D is for movies and not any sport ever.

The bastards ruined sports when they went to color tv. Black and white was perfectly fine. :character-willie:
