Chicago has to dump salary in the off season, as several new contracts kick in next year. They could dump some of those contracts now, and take on Kovalchuk's salary if Atlanta was up for it. From that perspective, a deal is possible; if not probable.

Clear some room for Kovy and then let him walk in FA for some room for Toews and Kane and Keith.

Actually PSP, this would be a great day for celebration if this trade happened.
Kovalchuck would only "Mess up" the system they have in Chicago. Haven't you heard, Kovalchuck would only create a mess where he goes. ;)

Chicago does this and they may as well write their season off, thats what I take from all the fans input, oh, and of course Razor and Roby.
So ya, I say cool beans to this trade. :?

So uhmmm....ya, people have had roughly 4 hours to respond. Its what I thought. All of this nonsense on Buffalo's system being affected by picking this guy up is pure folly. Everyone who posted that it wouldn't be worth it, my hats off to you, when the arguements ran out, so did you.

For the record.

KOVALCHUCK would be a friggen franchise player, get over it. He is, without a doubt, one of the top 10 players in the league. The real question everyone wants answered are: What would it cost us, both in the trade as well as the contract.

Being somewhat realistic, its going to cost us Vanek + MacArthur + prospect (Mancari or Gragnani) and 2nd round pick.
Is this worth Kovalchuck? IF he comes with a 10 year, 10 million dollar contract that is 10 mil a year, flatline.
Ya, this is well worth it. Hands down. You can't put a player at this age, ready to spend that 10 years fighting for the cup, on the back burner, thats just plain stupid.

We would need to not trade away Vanek for any real chance to me.

Vanek needs to be a winger for Kovalchuk.

Trade Roy, Pommers, Hecht, and a pick to grab him.

Connolly instead of Roy, Give them a D-man and a pick.

But no way Kovie lands here, he needs to come with a contract exstension if he does.

Ten years at ten million is too much, Kovalchuk IS not a Crosby, Ovechkin, or Malkin player.

I'd give him something along the lines of 7 a year, contracts are going down a bit again. The players who got anything over 7 a year was in that huge boom of outrageous contracts which none of them deserved.

Give him 7 year 49 million.

No one is going to trade for Mancari; they could have picked him up on waivers as recently as the last few weeks. They didn't; so obviously he has zero value.

I'll just say this.

Kovie spoke out about Buffalo's coaching saying they were foolish to treat Max the way they did because he's a hard worker and a very happy, talented player. Since Max's prime in Buffalo a few years back, we've slowly switched to a defensive style and slowly phased his free wheeling type of offense out. He was getting benched and seeing considerably less production. He moves to Atlanta and he's found new life on a similar free wheeling line with Kovalchuk.

Now, Kovie comes in to Buffalo already with a bad impression of the coaching staff with the whole Max thing. He will probably just play his own game, he's a franchise player afterall, right? He plays his own free wheeling type of offense that he's grown accustomed to and we see ourselves with another Max situation, a very talented offensive geared player not getting the production he should be because of our system. Do you think he'll just up and change his entire style of play that brought him success his entire NHL career in Atlanta? How do we even know he's capable of playing a proficient defensive game while still maintaining an offensive threat? That's what would have to happen for him to be half as effective here as he was in Atlanta and to not become a defensive liability (like what bought Max several tickets to Lindy's doghouse)... and I have to think that his numbers would go down as well, simply because offense doesn't seem to thrive in Buffalo these days.

And on top of that, personally, Kovalchuk has always struck me as kind of arrogant. Not necessarily a locker room cancer or anything, but still. If that's a little true, it doesn't bode well for his acceptance of and from the coaching staff and Lindy in Buffalo... which as I mentioned he's not particularly fond of already, and I'm sure they aren't fond of his criticism.

I'd do a 3 way with Chicago that sent Patrick Sharp here, Kovie there, and a combo of Stafford, pick, and prospect (from both chicago and buffalo) to Atlanta...lol.

I personally dont find Kovie that appealing, especially with some of the other names out there that may be moved at the deadline.

The Canes, Ducks, Blues, Jackets, Panthers, and Oilers all have very good talents that should be available for a much lesser price tag than what it will take to land Kovalchuk

I would laugh if Chicago traded Hossa to Atlanta for Kovy...unless there is a no movement clause in Hossa's contract.

I am pretty sure Hossa does have a no trade clause.
