Some more writing on the wall for Dems in 2010....several strong and well funded Democratic upstarts have dropped out of their races recently.

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing- ... -the-exits

So the Dems are down 5 challengers and are tossing up 4 additional incumbent seats to retirement.

Indeed. For now, we'll just have to elect some shoggoths to office to pave the way.

The next election cycle is effectively meaningless.

The Dems will most likely hold their majorities , but they will be reduced in size. The Repubs will likely seize that opportunity to continue to play obstructionism politics to set themselves up for 2012.

The only guaranteed winner in American politics is the corporate lobbyist.

Change indeed.

Well, at least it(change) gave some people, no wait, one guy a reason to wave his long, skinny finger around.

I realize change will be a long, slow, agonizing process, but this guy retracted his adamantium claws as soon as he got elected. We got duped again, o wait, we get duped EVERY time.

...and to believe I though a modern democrat could have testicles. ha ha

I changed my vote to the Democrats actually increasing seats in the Senate (while losing seats in the House, but retaining control of both).

This is going to be a rough year for incumbents of both parties, but I think the GOP is going to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by scaring the hell out of the American people.

It is looking like the extremist tea baggers in Florida could succeed in dumping Gov. Charlie Crist as their Senate candidate in favor of an unelectable fringe candidate (just like they did in the NY 23rd), in which case they will lose a GOP Senate seat from Florida. In South Carolina the county Republican Party organizations are censuring Lindsey Graham, a widely respected moderate Republican Senator, for being too moderate. The Republicans are so confident that they can take down the Demcrats that they mistakenly believe that Dick Cheney-style hatred and vitreol are what Americans are looking for this year.

Said conservative columnist David Brooks,

In the near term, the tea party tendency will dominate the Republican Party. It could be the ruin of the party, pulling it in an angry direction that suburban voters will not tolerate.

That was childish when it was first used and it still is.

Sorry. It isn't my term and I wasn't really thinking about it's other usage when I wrote this (my students had to explain what it meant when it first begain to be used widely).

Outside of the gay porn industry I have a difficult time conceiving of how this term could have even come into usage.

I heard it first, not through the tea party folks, but when I was trying to come up with an acronym to help my students remember World War I information.

I would have them remember the MAIN causes of the war (Militerism, Alliance system, Imperalism, Nationalism) and then the opposing sides. For the Central Powers I came up with T-BAG (Turkey, Bulgaria, Austria, Germany), but the kids just fell out of their chairs when I wrote it on the board.

They were not direct when explaining it, but I got the idea.

ok, back on topic....

5 more Senate Democrats, including Harry Reid and Blanche Lincoln, are seen as very vulnerable.
Quote:
In at least seven states -- Connecticut, Nevada, Ohio, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, North Dakota and Colorado -- the Democratic candidate for Senate trails the Republican in the most recent polls. In those states, Mr. Obama's popularity has dropped below the percentage of votes he drew in 2008, and opposition to the health-care-reform bill is deep and wide.

No doubt if the election were held today the Democrats (and all incumbents) would take a beating. However, the elections aren't for ten months.

Everything will depend on the economy.

If it is improving, Obama will be a genius and independents will reward his party. If it is not, then independents will side with Republicans and "throw the bums out."

Back when we were an agricultural nation you could predict elections by rainfall (a good year for farmers was a good year for incumbents). Today, it is all about the family budget.

For a little perspective keep in mind Ronald Reagan's first term:

"(Reagan's) popularity frequently dipped below 50 percent during his first term, plummeted to 46 percent during the Iran-Contra scandal, and never exceeded 68 percent. (By contrast, Clinton's maximum approval rating hit 71 percent.)"

Well, if you're in the stock market, the economy is already looking up.
If you're in the unemployment line you've got a long bleak outlook.

Unemployment is still rising...it hasn't even leveled off yet.
434,000 new unemployment claims last week alone.
And remember, the Federal government in all their wisdom have been propping up and stimulating for what, 15 months now? (all the way back to Bush)
There's no way we're out of the woods by the time of the election. If this turns out to be a jobless recovery like some are predicting, it's a net win for Democrats though, they get to expand the permanent underclass.

I like how there is an "Obama, Socialist?" advertisement at the bottom of this page right now.
