I'm VERY MUCH against credit checks as a condition of employment. I'm also against Myspace and Facebook checks which are pretty damn common nowadays too.

Sometimes it's good to be an old bastard and have a mile long resume and references.
I would hate to just be getting into the workforce with that garbage.

If someone tried that on me it would be a short conversation:

Potential employer: We need your social security number
Me: what for?
Potential employer: To run a credit check
Me: Fuck you.

Background check...fine. Drug test...I guess if you have to. Credit check? get the hell out of my face.

/for the record my credit is fine.
