Why is it that optimism is looked at as "rah rah?"

It's not "rah rah," and I'm not a cheerleader. There is plenty of evidence this season to suggest that this team is the real deal. And I'm happy about that.

Look, this stuff is getting real old.

If you think this team has what it takes to win the cup, great. If someone else thinks it doesn't, fine. We're here to discuss the team, right?

If "you"(not meaning you personally PSP) are one of the people that are getting angry about too much of either optimism or pessimism, then you could just maybe take a step back, until you're not angry. I'm not trying to act like a mod here(cuz I know I'm not), I just think everyone is over-reacting a bit is all.

Also, to point out a weakness somewhere is not to "discredit" the team. Simply showing where the team could improve is just that, nothing more. Hoping that they can improve there, as with more consistent scoring from the top forwards (or a better PP), is hoping to see a team that can not only compete with anybody, but have a real good chance at beating them too.

First, let me be real specific. I see the true Cup contenders right now as Chicago, San Jose, New Jersey, and maybe Washington. After that certainly Washington, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Calgary, and Vancouver are the 2nd tier teams in no particular order. Beating these teams once or twice in the regular season is one thing, but to beat Chicago, SJ, or NJ and overcome their size, skill, and discipline (as the case may be) in a seven game series is a tall order. Sure Buffalo could do it, but I wouldn't expect them to just yet. I wouldn't have them as a favorite in a series against those three teams, and Washington would probably be a coin toss.

So to assess the team that way, right now as maybe the 5th or 6th best team out there is hardly a "discredit". That's pretty good, but until they can get a consistent effort and consistent production from their best forwards I won't put them as a favorite over those top 3-4 teams. They may get there before the season ends, and I won't be surprised if everything starts to click. I just won't count on it just yet. I'll wait and see, and hope that they go into the playoffs playing well.

Hard to argue with that.

Point is, if the rest of the team comes around - via trade, or self realization; this season could be very interesting......

I agree, however, I also believe that it hasn't been all Miller by himself (although there have been nights when it seemed that he had to stand alone). I think Miller has benifited from a vastly improved defense. There is no doubt that if we had, Lalime, for instance, as our primary netminder (no offense to Patty, who has been playing well), we would be talking about a scramble for the #8 seed.

But, a good part of Miller's success this year has been the guys around him blocking shots, lifting sticks, back checking, pushing the puck to the boards and keeping the ice in front of him clear.

It will be interesting to see how Ryan plays with the American team at the Olympics. I think there will be less of a team mentality in that situation and Miller truly will have to stand alone at times.

Is he full time with the Orioles now?

For those who didn't know or didn't care to look this up, I did. "tldnr" is supposed to mean, "too long did not read".

Although I've asked twice recently in regard to CV's apparent pettiness toward me over the last several days, I'll try one more time.

So CV, if you're intent on acting like a 3rd grade brat toward me, are you going to continue this way without answering for yourself?

Make a decision to start acting like a responsible person toward me or keep it private. Don't continue to pollute the board with cheap jabs at me. Either make it private or just don't bother.

I think it's a real tribute to Miller that he was able to have the stats he had over the last couple seasons with the lack of support he suffered from. He only needed a decent effort in front of him to have the stats that prove he's a top three NHL goalie.

We all knew Miller was this good, just was wondering when he would have the defense needed to let him shine.

What Mike said. Last season, I thought Miller had topped out with fantastic stats. Then this season came around, and I'm left jaw agape as I watch him play.

Maybe not THIS good, but we all knew Miller could put up top five stats in Sv% and GAA in the NHL.

I agree...kinda. I have to add I think one of the biggest factors has been clearing the puck out when Miller does give up a rebound, or can't immediately kind the puck. There have been several instances where the puck gets knocked to the open side and there's a defenseman there to clear it out. You don't often see a forward or d-man jumping in and burying a loose puck on Miller.

I'm with Zilla and Caro, I have to give some credit to the D, they've been doing their job well.

This team is winning games with Patty in goal this year.

This team would still be a playoff team, even without Miller.

Miller instantly makes them a cup contender.

If the power play continues to improve (it has looked very good the past few games) and Ruff keeps fine tuning the system, the Sabres are going to be a miserable team to play against.

As it is now, it's very difficult for anyone to beat the Buffalo Sabres. Every post game interview with another coach or player, they all talk about the same things: they're swarmed by pressure and have no time with the puck, and Miller is a pain in the ass to score on when you do get an opportunity.

And given how well this team has responded to adversity speaks well to our chances come playoffs (should we make them). The past few years we have been besieged by two things, the inability to end a losing streak, and the inability to sustain a winning streak. Those problems have disappeared.

When they come out flat for a game or period, they usually address it, if not the following period, then the following game.
