Hard to avoid the coverage if you're watching cable news.
The destitution and poverty are mind boggling.
The rescue efforts underway even more-so.

horrible situation for sure.

Just like the earthquake in China, thousands of lives could have been saved with simple building codes.

I showed my daughter some pictures from there this morning and told her we were going to donate money to help the people and she said she wants to take money from her piggy bank to send to the little girls that lost their homes (it made me so proud :) )

I was really close to starting a thread on this.

I feel terrible for them. Just terrible.

One of the most disturbing pictures I saw was a collapsed hotel with a man's feet sticking out from the rubble. I can't begin to imagine the horror the people who live there are dealing with.

The saddest thing I've seen about this disaster?

A Facebook update this morning from a guy I went to high school with.

These people were living in a disaster zone BEFORE the earthquake. Now it is a living hell.

The price of food is so far out of reach that many Haitians have resorted to eating mud in order to fill their bellies.

The worst things have a tendency to happen to the least deserving.

The best people in this world are treated the worst by their fellow human beings. Haiti is devastated by an earthquake when they've already been down for decades.

The difference between that country and the Dominican Republic is astonishing.

What makes that even sadder is the Dominican Republic is lush and rich with resorts. Same damn island.

Not to politicize it XC, but this guy is a shining example of my hatred for Republicans. He's a fairly active member of the local GOP, along with 4 or 5 other guys that have similar ideas and comments every time something bad happens somewhere else in the world.

I know that it's not an accurate representation of what the GOP really stands for, but that was my frame of reference growing up.

Hate filled assholes aren't confined by political parties.

Agreed.

I think it's sadder hear that most credit card companies are still taking their transaction fee cuts on charitable donations. Apparently they found it in their hearts to waive them for Katrina donations, but when it comes to a foreign disaster, they keep on profiting.

I'm sort of lucky...where I work helped found a charitable foundation. When ever these disasters come around, they offer matching donations from all employees.

I suggest people keep their eyes open for such matching deals from their employers.

Perhaps the Christian thing to do is let them die, because of their pact with the devil and all.

Pat Robertson says Haiti paying for 'pact to the devil'

He's not the only one.

Rush Limbaugh couldn't wait to put his political spin on a humanitarian tragedy, encouraging people not to give money to the relief effort because "we've already donated to Haiti" and telling his listeners that "your name is going to end up on a mailing list for the Obama people to start asking you for campaign donations."

Wonderful.

And tens of millions of people listen to this asshole every week?

He may be a prick, but he's factually correct.
Haiti received $163 million US tax payer dollars last year.

also...this isn't exactly free either.

$163 million to Haiti would equal what...$0.50 donated for every American. Yeah, we've really each donated a lot to Haiti. Jesus H. Christ where do people get off?

I was listening to the radio on the way home yesterday, and I kept thinking about the people of Haiti and how I should just go buy a ticket and go there and volunteer. Figured I could be useful to translate for American medical personnel, or at the very least just as another set of hands to remove rubble. I wouldn't even think twice about putting the ticket on my credit cards if I thought I'd still have a job when I got back. Probably nothing but a pipe dream, but god I feel bad for Haiti and would like to do something to help in a way that I can actually see.

So just because we, as a nation, have already helped out the poorest nation in this hemisphere, even though the actions of this nation helped create the situation that has kept them poor for so long, we're supposed to just say 'Oh, sorry, we already gave. Sorry about your earthquake!!'.

Why don't we take a chunk of the taxpayer provided 'bonus' money given to these financial fucks and send that down there instead?
