I just doubt that Darcy commits to any player with a high contract with years attached to it. That kind of player would have to be someone that Darcy wants anyway - a player that doesn't bring a real high cap hit, a player he wants anyway, and a player that is actually on the trading block. It's pretty unlikely even if teams start shopping players under contract.

BTW, Minnesota may put Sykora up for sale even if they are in the playoff hunt, but I doubt Darcy would want him either.

Minnesota may put up Owen Nolan as well. Minnesota has drafted really well the past few years, and they have young talent ready, and have many core players being UFAs this year. May make Nolan the odd man out, and I've always felt he'd play great under Ruff, and would be a valuable forward for this team still.

My son said he used to pick up Nolan in FA on NHL07 and then trade him for like a 2nd and 3rd pick in his season mode. He just asked me, "that guy is still playin hockey dad? Isn't he like 100 yrs old?" LMAO

I'm right with you on that, but I doubt Carolina will let him go. If I were Rutherford, I wouldn't be prepared to give away one of the most important pieces of my team, especially while he's still relatively young.

They're going to get a high draft pick to play WITH Staal.

Yes but, trading him would give them a couple of players that are young and have upside that this high draft pick can play with, plus he could swing an additional high draft pick to add to the lineup either this draft or a combination of the next 2 drafts, for example:

Connolly, MacArthur, Lydman, Prospect (Mancari or Gragnani) + 2nd and 4th round picks.

or

Connolly, Stafford, Lydman

or

Stafford, MacArthur, Lydman + 2nd rd pick

and the interchangable choices could go on and on.

Still 40 games to be played. If Quinn wants the cup so badly you better get out and do something for it. Right now this team is benefiting from Millers stellar season. Come playoffs other teams will crash the net harder, play tougher this will be the real test. Miller alone can't make it all we gonna need our top six bringing their A game, stellar Miller and a hard nosed defense.

Obviously this team IS a playoff contender but sorry to say it by no way a cup contender. Blackhawks, Sharks, Redwings, Devils are just...well better. Personally I think we're capable of making it to the second round, if we make the playoffs. Maybe next season IF we can get the needed assets which would mean: Golisano/Quinn use money to get the assets.

Does it cross your mind that we have wins against every single one of those teams you have listed, outside of San Jose who we haven't played yet?

How about the fact that you omitted Washington and Pittsburgh, who we also have wins against?

I feel like Buffalo fans are like abused dogs at the SPCA. They get slapped around by misfortune and are afraid of a human hand forever, even if it's holding a T-bone steak.

Yes we do have wins against so do they, the difference is they're NOW loaded and probably gonna load more come tdl! Also keep in mind we haven't seen their playoffhockey yet.

Ok the Pens yes but the Caps aren't a cup contender they are a one man show.

Theres nothing wrong with being optimistic but seriously some sense of realism doesn't hurt either. First make the playoffs then we'll see. If we make it past the first round I would admit this season a success..

Andrew Fillipponi Reporting
Sabres Managing Partner Larry Quinn responded to comments made by Schopp and the Bulldog Wednesday. Quinn stopped by our studios to tell listeners how badly his organization wants to win the Stanley Cup.

“Every day I come into the office, more so Darcy and Lindy, and that’s all that we think about. Now what road do you take to get there? “

Identifying a player to put the team over the hump would be one way. How open is the team to trading for a high-priced talent at the deadline?

“You should do it if it’s the one piece from the Cup. We have to believe that that’s the way to go and we’re not afraid of it.”

Quinn talked about how he fantasizes about winning the big one. He feels like some Western New Yorkers are convinced that no matter how good they are, the dye has been cast. They’ll never win it all.

“I think it’s the psyche of the community. You think about what we’ve gone through. ..My generation saw 25,000 steel jobs lost. 8,000 in the auto industry. You had people worrying about their livelihoods, seeing their children leave. We’ve been the butt of jokes. “

“I think that’s what Buffalo fans are about. I think it goes beyond sports, feeling like the guy who got kicked too much. “

One thing that got cleared up was the involvement of owner Tom Golisano.

“He’s incredibly involved. I talk to Tom at least twice a day…He never, ever tries to make a decision. He’ll ask every question you can think of. Everything I said about me wanting to win the cup, that’s him times two.”

As usual, Quinn has some ideas to make the Sabres product better. He said changes are in store for next year. He didn’t have an exact date, but the transition to road games airing in high definition is underway.

I think I may have to give up a little man love for Larry...and I can't tell you how shocking it is for me to type that.

I wouldn't. I've seen many pictures of him, and everyone of those should have Wayne Campbell sitting next to him with a cue card saying "this man has no penis".

..but seriously, aside of his good looks, swank personality, and all-around ladies man vibe, Larry at least "claims" to want a cup. We'll be able to tell if the purse string tighten up, or not.

Okay, first of all, I'm assuming you mean wary, not weary. Second, people got excited in the past because of good starts that trailed off long before this point in past seasons. This team is for real. You don't have a fluke half of a season. Where does it end? People can be wary of 3/4 of a season of success? 7/8? 81/82?

And I always hear about how other teams will be bringing their playoff hockey when they finally roll around. Won't the Sabres? Is this some weird alternate universe where 15 other teams will step up their play, but the Sabres will remain the only playoff team that won't?

Well, it's hard to say nay right now, but he probably means we can't understand the depth of this right now. Are we really in the leagues top 6 teams?? If so, how long can we remain there?? Would one injury send us hurtling?? Will scoring by committee be good enough?? Can we add a player to put up in the top 3??

I think these are some of the counter points to "rah, rah, rah". We are all super happy for the Sabres(not just the experts), and we all just want to talk hockey and are happy to do it.

Just next time irony, don't throw a GIANT bone out there.(just realized I said that to YOU of all people). LOL

huh? im talking about PSP getting upset, maybe not upset, but doesnt understand why everyone isnt going all in yet. i like looking at the sabres place in the standings, but that doesnt mean i cant have any questions or concerns. and i dont think having those questions or concerns should invalidate my hockey knowledge, or discredit what they have done thus far. like i said earlier, you can not win the stanley cup in january. if people want to plan the parade, thats fine. but im not one of them yet.

Who said we are winning a cup this year, if it happens then it happens, but we will be in the playoffs, unless we lose the rest of our games from this point onward.

We are a playoff team who should have home ice advantage in the first round at least. Unless we do an Ottawa Senators, where we start out the entire first half great then, barely make the playoffs in the 8th seed.

And to be honest right now, I'm very glad this Buffalo team is in the top 4 of the East. 65 points is first, 63 is second, 62 is third, and 61 is fourth, then it is 53 for fifth.

The gap between 4th and 5th is an astronomical number really, 8 points separates Pittsburgh to Boston and I'm very glad we aren't fighting it out in the 6-13 spots in the East, because I think Boston being in 5th is the spot they stay in.

Because from 6 to 13th, they are separated by 5 points. I mean the top 4 are only separated by 4 points, but these teams hold HUGE leads on the bottom 8 playoff teams.

Be happy we aren't in the West right now also, from places 3rd to 9th the separation in points is 4. Colorado in 3rd has 58 points, and Detroit in 9th has 54.

The top five teams in the league all have over 60 points. Two 68 points in the West and the rest in the East. I'm starting to really think this Sabres team is going to have a nice long playoff run.

I'm still not exactly sure of this team sometimes, but we have the right to worry about our team, especially after two years without the playoffs.
