That year we got crushed by them I think also.

The year afterwards, Emery was standing on his head most of the games.

They don't have the firepower or goaltending to compete with us if we draw a matchup with them in the playoffs. Plus we have alot more grit than before.

Wouldn't know it watching games this season between us and Ottawa. Unless we see some serious mentality changes come playoff time, I REALLY don't wouldn't like a series against them.

I'm only afraid of Washington and New Jersey in the postseason.

In the 05-06 reg season Buffalo was 3-5 against Ottawa and outscored 35-21. Buffalo won the playoff 4-1.

In the 06-07 reg season Buffalo was 3-5 against Ottawa and outscored 33-25. Ottawa won the playoff 4-1.

In 07-08 they were 3-4-1 against Ottawa and outscored 28-26, no playoff.

In 08-09 they were 1-4-1 against Ottawa and outscored 22-14, no playoff.

This season they are 0-2-1 and being outscored 10-5.

So since the lockout Buffalo is 10-20-3 and outscored 128-91.

Thread update:

If the season ended right now, we'd be in 3rd place(though the Caps have played 2 more games) and we'd be playin the Rangers..

I don't care who they play if in the first round. I now have confidence that this team can beat the teams below them in the standings.

I'd take the Rags in the playoffs, though facing Lundqvist does freak me out a little bit.

If the season ended today, that would be way too long an offseason.

Yea he can be really hot in the playoffs, but when we played them in 06-07 playoffs he was hot and we still kicked their butts..

Any playoff series involving the Sabres would end up in mostly 2-1 and 1-0 games, I think, but that would be especially true against the Rangers.

Fortunately the Sabres have only lost one one-goal game in regulation the entire season, and that game was 2-0 basically the entire time with a meaningless goal scored at the end to make it 2-1.

They have no offense, but in the areas where it matters in the postseason, they have the stats this year. They would perform better there than they do right now, and they already win most games.

Buffalo will end up playing either Philly, NYR, NYI, Bos, Mon, or Ott in the 1st rd. If they win they'll almost certainly play Washington 2nd rd. If they win they'll probably play NJ 3rd rd.

Buffalo made it to the '75 finals after two playoff rounds. They have won three playoff rounds only once ever, in 1999. They were a #7 seed and upset Ottawa, then were fortunate to play #6 Boston and then #4 Toronto. After Ottawa, (which was a typical playoff choker back then) Buffalo had soft competition.

This season they can still get stronger (on their own or at trade deadline) and be able to handle the competition, but it seems like a daunting task. Any of those 1st rd teams would be hard to play against except Montreal. They're the only team that isn't very physical or tough defensively (but the refs would make up for it). If Buffalo plays their best though, or very close to it, they should win. Washington could be much stronger in goal after Varlamov returns, and NJ is probably the most disciplined team with the best goaltending that Buffalo could play. Even if Buffalo plays their best it would be very tough to beat those two teams over seven games.

Buffalo is 2-3 against those two teams so far. They have three games left to show where they stand against the top competition in the East.
