So he was better than his last time as a commentator, then?

My biggest beef with Sylvester was how he got excited when the OTHER team scored! Since I only get to listen to the games, all I have to go by is the PBP. If he just wouldn't get so hyper for the other team's goals I think I could stand him. If he ends up in RJ's seat permanently he'll need a different color commentator. Maybe Rob Ray? The more I hear his comments the better I like him.

Blech, caught a bit of the Islanders game and man...Kevin is merely a AHL play by play guy at best. Ha, oh well

I really don't need a lot of emotion during the play-by-play. Actually I wouldn't mind if nobody said a word during the action. I only would like some commentary between whistles and player/coach/strategy insights, or opinions/explanations on close officiating calls.

Sometimes RJ gets a little convoluted in his calls, and of course Harry makes some strange comparisons/sayings and just sounds drunk sometimes. I'd like, in most sports, for there to be less talk and let the action speak for itself. With the mostly non-stop action in hockey there really doesn't need to be a lot of talk.

Then put your damn TV on mute. The rest of us will party with RJ.

Then I couldn't hear the hits, pucks off the post, etc...it's a no win Hammy. No win...lol.

BTW, I'm not saying I don't like RJ. I'm just saying in general hockey play-by-play isn't that critical. The game itself is exciting enough. Baseball and football have so much more down time that they rely on commentating much more.

Good Lord. I can't even describe how horrible that was.

Anyone know what the guy's problem was? Was he not a good reader or something?

Looking through the comments people are saying that the real sports reporter was a no show and the teleprompter was fucked up. I guess putting a person with no experience in front of a wonky teleprompter is a recipe for disaster. Who would have thought. Who really knows what the deal was though. I just feel bad for the poor guy. I give him props for sticking it out till the bitter end...I probably would have burst into tears and ran off set in the middle of the report.

That's so hilarious!   It does make it better, that it wasn't his fault, and that he became kinda famous for it....

I have to agree, if they offered a channel with no commentary (or drastically reduced, as the example you give) i'd probably choose that. I dont NEED someone to tell me that "roy just feathered a pass to mac who dropped it to connolly who etc etc etc", i'm watching it happen, I'd rather just have RJ and Neale giving great color commentary and quick analysis during whistles and breaks.

Play-by-play is quite necessary for radio broadcasts...

I don't see the problem. RJ works to give play-by-play to WGR. He calls the game the way he does primarily for radio listeners. To not have that on TV but to have the commentary would require someone else to broadcast the audio and then not broadcast it over and over again, depending on what part of the game it is. He would always be getting cut off mid-sentence after stoppages in play when he starts doing play-by-play rather than commentary, and when he switches back to commentary, only half his sentence would be heard.

Pipe dream, people. :P

Agreed. And I don't mind listening to the radio only every once in a while. It's enchanting, it's romantic. A testament to History.

Oh crap, I said the 'H' word.

I think he will be. I'm pretty sure that was the logic in bringing him over from his Erie Otters job.
