I work 7:30 to 4:15 during the week, and have to be up by 6:45 every day to make it in on time.

That having been said, I am most certainly nto a morning person. Granted I'm not one of those people that sleeps in until 2:00 PM either, but wake me before 9:00 and I'll most likely be surly.

I tend to stay up sometime between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM when I don't have to work the following day, usually being productive for good chunks of that time. In school I did some of my best work on projects that I started late on and didn't want to put down.

I'm not lazy either, which sleeping in may indicate. Once I get started in on something, it's difficult to get my stopped. Anyone who has seen me write (at times plunking down 30+ pages in a single sitting) can attest to this.

What are your sleep habits?
How do they affect you?
What do you prefer, what does that say about you?

I'm going to reply to this thread; it's so lonely.

When left to my own devices, I typically go to bed around 5:00 in the morning and get up at 1:00-2:00 in the afternoon. That is my natural sleep cycle, I think. Last summer, I decided to find a job on night shift, and I did get one for June and July that was 10:00-7:00 five nights a week. I thought that that would be great for my sleeping because I am basically nocturnal as it is, and I really don't sleep when in school because rather than going to bed earlier to make up for having to get up earlier my body will not tire at all until at least 4:00 in the morning, and it's getting progressively worse as the years pass, since my freshman year of high school (which I spent going to bed at 7:30-8:00 every night for most of it because I have no idea what was wrong with me for seven months, but something was).

It didn't work out that well, though. I'd usually end up staying awake until 9:00 or 10:00 in the morning and then not be able to sleep past 2:00ish... Yeeeeaaaah. Night shift is out as a viable option in my future, but days aren't looking much better. I take diphenhydramine and Nyquil to help me fall asleep a lot at school when I know that I will be exhausted the next day if I don't.

When I was not doing so well, I'd go through cycles of sleeping 18-20 hours a day and then not sleeping at all for 2-3 days, only crashing when I induced it myself by taking a ton of diphenhydramine (looked it up online since then, and those doses should have made me stay awake and wildly hallucinate, the opposite of what I wanted; i don't know why they worked). Those were interesting times.

tl;dr: I'm a complete night owl, but I also need it to be night time for me to get good sleep.

I'm also so there with you on being productive late at night... This past semester I pulled four all-nighters getting papers written and got 98-100 on all of them. It worked well. I work so much better if I don't split things up into a little here, a little there, and just plug away and get everything done at once. It got ridiculous at the end of last semester when I had to work basically non-stop for two weeks and started eating basically just one meal a day because I forget to eat when I'm that dedicated to something (a friend with the same problem and I promised to remind each other to eat, buuut it didn't work because two absorbed people... yeah :P ), but I love the feeling of working and getting things done when I'm in that mode. Oh, it's just fantastic. When I write poetry and songs and prose, I always have things come like bam bam bam in the middle of the night, too. I can write something in five minutes then, easily; have me do it at noon, though, and I will struggle and take well over an hour to get a poem written. When I'm at school i get most of my work done 12:00-5:00 in the morning. I hang out with people all day long, and they NEVER see me doing homework, but after my roommate goes to bed, it's crunch time. I just don't sleep.

Well I am a nightowl or nighthawk however you want to use it. I normally stay up late and sleep in late. Especially if I don't have anything to do the next day.

I also tend to stay up late and still having to get up earlish. I have to be up by 10 everyday for class and I normally stay up until past 2am daily. During high school I would stay up late and then just nap in school or after school, and I'll nap after classes now.

I can function just fine on 4 hours of sleep and when I actually get up you can't hardly tell I was up very late. Other times I get 10+ hours of sleep and still very drowsy.

But I stay up late and sometimes take naps during the day depending on if I want to do anything or not.

It must be nice to be able to have a sleep habit. I remember when it was just up to me when I wanted to sleep. These days I could be working any time day or night, sometimes on very short notice. Then when I'm not working my four year old decides when I sleep and whether I sleep well. With any luck I'll be dead soon so I can catch up on my rest.

I am working "twilight" shift (read: 2nd shift), which means I am often up until five hundred o'clock in the morning.....as evidenced by my posting in the last month. Surprisingly enough, after re-reading my posts, I am fairly lucid. ;)

I go to college in the morning and work late night shifts at night. Sleep doesn't really happen.

As the Sabres games start around 1:00am in the night here in Austria I don't get any sleep at all. ;)

I prefer to go to bed at a decent hour like 10 or 11 and wake up at 6 or 7. I hate sleeping in past 9:30, I feel like the day is wasted when I sleep in. I can however stay up late to wee hours the night and still wake up at 9 and feel fine, but I do prefer to get my 8 hours.

Same here. Why I chose a career path where I have to be into work by 7:30 I do not know.

My sleep habits vary wildly depending on the situation of the following day. Work? In bed by 11, up at 5. No work? Typically in bed around 2 or 3, up at 8. Party? In bed around 5, up at 10.

I am NOT a morning person...I hate it when people try to have conversations with you when you're eating breakfast.

Well I stayed up until 5 playing PS3, and woke up well into the day, oh well. I wanted to sleep last night.

I'll probably do the same thing tonight, play video games for a bit then force myself to get up around 11 or so.

I've been broken for years.

Back in the EMS days, I'd work 6a-6p on a Monday, then get scheduled for a 6p-6a Tuesday overnight. There were plenty of times that I'd work 18 hours with only 6 hours off between shifts.

Even though it's been 10+ years, I've never really gotten past an odd sleep schedule. I have a normal work schedule now, but still have the occasional overnight maintenance that I have to do, so my body just doesn't seem to want to reset to something normal.

Up until a few years back, I don't remember having ever slept past 9:30 am - sans illness or hangover. I worked a job that rotated shifts, so I was all over the place. I started to sleep when the job allowed me to sleep. I would occasionally wake up, and not know where I was. (One of the job shifts allowed for some sleep on overnight shifts.)

I left that job several years ago. My sleep schedule has never recovered. Either that or I'm getting older, and sleep is now no longer an option - but rather a requirement....

1:30 am to 9:30 am'ish is my weekly routine....

I think a persons sleep cycle changes with College/work schedule, as well as age. In college, I had to withdrawl from a couple of 8, 9, and even a 10 oclock class, just because i couldn't get my ass out of bed - I was definitely a night owl. My first job out of college was rotating days/graves twelve hour shifts, and I still tended towards being a night owl. Now that I have worked day shifts for the past fifteen years that required me to be at work at 7am, my early rising bird dogs, and my penchant for being the first person on the lake, I am definitely an early bird. Maybe when I retire, I will go back to being a night owl, who knows?

The last few months, not falling asleep much before 2 am, and the last month has been more like
5 am, and waking up Godawful early at 10:30 am. It's killing me. No energy for anything. >:-/

::frustrated::

I'm all over the place with sleep. My mom and I are night owls, and we'll be up until 4 am sometimes doing the weirdest things. It's when we spend a lot of our quality time together.
I usually go to bed late and get up at like 11 (it's nice taking a semester off :D). When I have to get up early though, I really don't mind though. I don't like mornings, but I'm usually really personable in the morning oddly enough. It used to drive my very grumpy roommate nuts because we'd go to sleep around 5, and then 3 hours later I'd be awake and cheerful. It usually ended up with various items being thrown at me.
