Where in Buffalo is the best experience for wings for an out of town couple? My best friend from college and his wife are going to Niagara falls tomorrow to see the falls...probably around the rainbow bridge. They want to get dinner in Buffalo so his wife (from Texas) can have Buffalo wings.

I'm thinking Duffs. Any other ideas? The only rule is good wings. And REASONABLE prices.

It sounds like they are coming for the experience, as much as for the wings. In that case they have to go to the Anchor Bar, where wings were born. They eat the wings, buy a bottle of the sauce, and tell their friends about the experience.

Good wings, but their suicidal sauce isn't really that hot, in my opinion, but then again most folks don't go for the hottest wings.

Medium hot is hotter than hot at most places, including Duff's. Hot is very hot, extra hot is almost unbearable. I don't even want to know what suicidal is like.

Duffs is good, much better than the Anchor Bar, but my only complaint is they are swimming in sauce. They come in a bowl that ends up being about half full of sauce after you finish the wings.

Anchor Bar isn't very good at all - as mentioned above, they're not very crispy, and they charge extra for suicidal, which barely qualifies as hot.

Bar Bill is a pain in the ass. If they don't know you, they often won't serve you; at least until you've waited an hour.

Well, they are a bar with only 6 tables, I never go there around dinner time expecting to get a table quickly. Not as bad in the summer when you can sit on the patio.

Truth is, it's hard to get a bad wing in Buffalo...unless you go to some national chain that doesn't know what the fuck they're doing. I agree with what Zilla said about the Anchor Bar being the place to go as a tourist looking for the whole wing history and experience. Plus, the wings are pretty good if you aren't looking for a suicide mission - I like their buttery taste - and it's actually in Buffalo, not the outlying area.

The original Duffs is also a great pick, because they too have a long history and a pure, authentic wing experience. A little too saucy, maybe, but awesome wings if you want some real heat.

Hey Pat ~

Bar Bill in East Aurora
http://barbill.com/

Yes, some say a longish wait . . . because the place is hopping! If you know that, just chill - have a few more beers and chat.

Just went there with my sis and bro-in-law over XMAS visit. The best thing is . . . no youngsters!!! My sis (41) meets her gf's there for that reason - probably mid-late 30's+ yrs old crowd?

Most highly excellent food, known for wings and beef, and it was a fun bar atmosphere. The place looks nicer inside in the dark, at night, than the pictures here. (Many restaurants/bars don't look their best in the light of day.) Although it's smallish inside - intimate - there are more tables that aren't shown in the pics.

Gabriel's Gate, in Allentown
http://www.allenstreet.com/gabriel/

Went there years ago, but it was memorable - excellent wings and cozy, comfortable atmosphere. Actually, it was XMAS Eve, with my sis and bro-in-law again - sat next to the fire on a snowy night. (Pitiful, huh. But our family was otherwise occupied, with friends.)

Methinks Duff's is overrated. Gasp. Okay, I said it! Agree with ETC - maybe too saucy for my taste.

Hope dat helps.

Make sure your best friend's wife tries some beef on weck, too. Be sure to slather on the horseradish.

I agree with the Duffs/Anchor crowd.

I like my wings extra hot, and while the Anchor bar's suicidal isn't that bad, I also like them to taste decent and a lot of really hot sauces fail miserably in that respect. The anchor does not.

If you want a shithole, check out the Marlboro Inn up in Sanborn near NCCC. Get some wings in their slider sauce, they're good as hell.

Duff's and Bar Bill are great, but I don't know if those are ideal locations for an out of town couple since they're out in the suburbs.

I would recommend Gabriel's Gate in Allentown. The wings are great, nice location, and the overall ambiance of the restaurant is nice. The Anchor Bar is good too...even though a lot of locals can be kind of cyncal/jaded since they see it as a "tourist trap", but I still think the wings are good, although I'm not really picky. I remember La Nova having really good wings and I always hear good things about them, but to be honest I haven't had La Nova in years.

I've always noticed that. It's amazing how different a bar/restaurant can look with just the lighting. Lighting is everything.

Duffs is actually the most convenient to Niagara Falls though. Bar Bill is quite far out from there, at least 45 minutes anyway.

LaNova used to be good when I lived in Blackrock. I would order a minipack (Medium pie and 20 wings) several times a week.
I can't recall ever actually eating at a LaNova location though...always delivery.

LaNova's hot garlic BBQ wings are orgasmic

I haven't been down to Gabriel's Gate in years, not after my last couple trips down to Frizzy's.

Phil, Missy, and I went there last Friday after the Bandits game...amazing beer, amazing wings, nice atmosphere, and good surroundings...I'm definitely down to go again whenever someone wants to go.

Was last there about 12 years ago. Very nice, but a little too metro-polished and upscale for a wing recommendation. More of a chardonnay restaurant with very good chicken wings.

I can agree with that, but prices are still very buffalo. The most expensive thing on the menu was a 20 oz porter house steak for like 21.95 or something like that.

For the money, I was extemely pleased.

We each had a pint of beer, then got a pitcher, double of wings, 2 wecks, and a tuna melt, and the total bill was only 63.29

I've never eaten at the pizzeria either, just picked it up. I used to eat it more when I lived in Kenmore.

Damn now you guys have gotten me really hungry...just ordered some wings from Rix.
