I don't recall ever getting the letter in January, but I have in February for sure, even when they haven't been doing this well.

No, they always mail out order forms to season ticket and mini-pack holders, so they have the option of purchasing playoff tickets before they go onsale to the general public.

No, they saw the "get excited" thread, and wanted to do something about it..

Not for awhile. Pretty sure they don't sell those until the team is clinched for a spot.

Yes. Stupid season ticket people better not get all the tickets before I have a chance. Last time, we only got two tickets instead of four because it would be too expensive, but it just occurred to me that maybe we won't get any tickets because I'm going to college next year

They will. The Sabres want to have a strong season ticket base, so they bribe season ticket and mini pack holders with every perk imaginable.

Yeah, that's part of the deal for mini-pack holders too. Opportunity to purchase playoff tickets before the general public, $2 off ticket prices, and other crap that I can't remember.
