If that's an argument against my point, it's pretty weaksauce. I'm sure homosexuality predates religion, too.

Tell that to a religious person. Good luck.

No not at all, its an argument against marriage being a religious sacrament as the justification behind being against gay marriage.

This is NOT a nation founded on religion, so take your Bible thumping antics elsewhere.

Calm down.

Marriage, for better, or worse in my opinion, is regulated and controlled by the state because it is a legal contract to which many laws apply.
Those laws are friggin old so they don't consider things like a guy wanting to wear a dress and marry his best buddy.
It takes a long time to change those laws.

No one crusaded for that, it is what it is.

Since public opinion is against gay marriage (if you can't pass that in California you can't pass it anywhere) you're going to have to wait for the courts to reverse those laws.

The real answer here is civil unions for all and marriage is only a religious term.
End of story.

Exactly. The issue here isn't whether a gay couple wants to use the term "married" or not. They could care less about that, they just want equal spousal rights under the law, ie shared benefits and rights that apply to married opposite sex couples. I'm straight, but know many gay pepole and have gay friends. I believe they are entitled to the same "rights" anyone else is...all while being AGAINST gay "marriage." As a Catholic I believe that term, NOT right, has always been and should always be, reserved for a union between a man and a woman. BUT a gay couple deserves any and all rights/benefits of married couples, but the "term" marriage, as it is, is a union between a man and a woman, just my opinion. This does not mean that a civil union between two consenting, same sex adults should not carry all the obligations/benefits that come with marriage.

Playing devils advocate here. I think the big thing about same sex marriage is that marriage is a religious sacrement that has turned into a legal one. Marriage, as a religious sacrement, is between a man and a woman, its in the bible and is recognized that way around the world.

Actually, the bible doesn't give specific details or directions about marriage ceremonies at all. There are marriages mentioned in the bible, but no specifics about what they should or should not entail, in terms of a service.

However, the bible is very clear that polygamy is allowed. Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. Polygamy is found throughout the Old Testament. And before folks start saying that the Old Testament doesn't apply to Christians, recall Jesus's comment on that issue.

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law (the Old Testament) or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke or a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law (the Old Testament) until everything is accomplished."

Nowhere in the New Testament does Jesus repudiate or condemn polygamy (or homosexuality for that matter - not a topic he was interested in talking about, apparently, since he never brought the subject up). He did speak over 800 times about money. He had quite a bit to say about treatment of the poor. I wish modern tele-evangelists, such as Pat Robertson, took their priorities from the issues Jesus actually cared about rather than their own bigotry. People cherry pick the parts of the bible to fit their own preconceived opinions and ignore those parts that make them uncomfortable.

So, I think we should keep marriage as god intended - a sacred union between a man and 700 women.
