So I will start I guess with prolly one of the most famous verses in the Bible.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.

I think that verse is pretty self explanatory, or at least I think it is.

Rutledge, I think you are correct that this verse is pretty self explanatory and not one that most people struggle with. If I could offer a verse that a good friend of mine, who is a practicing Christian, struggles with:

(Ephesians 5:22-23) Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church...

My friend is a strong, independent woman whose husband is a traveling saleman, so she is use to running the family while he is away on business trips. When he comes home she has a difficult time conforming to this passage of scripture.

So, my question for discussion (if you choose to respond) is two-fold. First, is there a way to interpret this passage and others like it in a way that conforms to our modern sensabilites about equality between the sexes, and secondly, how do you deal with biblical passages that conflict with your own sense of right and wrong?

Although I am not a Christian, I like the idea that we are all "subject" to one another. Wives are subject to their husbands, but husbands are also subject to their wives. Perhaps, the passage can be looked at as the different duties we own to each other as man and woman?

(Rutledge, I hope this gets the discussion back onto the original path you intended.) :)

To be honest, I who have never been married and only had 1 gf in my entire 19 years of existance :P lol view this as it cuts both ways... Women should acknowledge that the Man is the head of the household and he should be treated with such respect, BUT Men shouldnt abuse that power and treat his wife like trash. He should love her and care for her and other things. So It cuts both ways. But a relationship should be a 50-50 thing. Men shouldnt do things without consulting a wife (unless its a gift) and Women shouldnt take things into her own hands whenever she feels like it, she should consult the husband as well and they should agree upon something they both can handle and deal with. Just my two cents of course :)

Let me preface this by saying that I do not want to bash anyone's beliefs, but perhaps find a convincing argument to counter my doubts. I went to St Mary's Roman Catholic church on Main Street in Lockport for 14 years, EVERY 4:30 Saturday Mass. I was an alter server, and participated in most holiday masses.

I guess my real point of contention in the Bible is that it is so old...that outside the ten commandments, times were different. Manual labor, not computers, ruled the world. People *were* property, and prior to JC, following the Bible was just the same as worshiping Zeus, Tartarus, Cronus, or any of the other mythological Gods.

I see Jesus Christ as the Barack Obama of 2000 years ago, and I'm not saying it to be argumentative. I'm making the comparison because those people, as people of today, needed a savior, needed a change and the promise of hope. Information is more available and reliable today than it was then, and as such, I have my doubts. I suppose that's why they call it faith...

So your saying that after 3 years of Obama some people are going to Crucify him? Lol Totally Kidding... But I understand where you are coming from. It seems logical, but I tend to disagree, I completely understand where you are coming from, but Jesus was predicted in coming... well Obama could be too if he is the anti-christ... which I highly doubt... haha but still.. Idk... it seems like the Bible predicted jesus and he knew a lot about the old law before he should have, and was speaking out against wrong. Obama is just a man who became President. haah but I dont want to turn this into a political debate so i will stop right there.

I think God has a sense of humor, my dad and I always joke about that... his usual response is "I bet God leaned over to Moses and said 'Watch This' and he got a kick out of it" lol... Idk I guess it depends on humor as God sees it but not as humans see it... I tend to view it as since God is supreme and has knowledge beyond our understanding that he laughs at things we wouldnt get. Kinda like the smart geeks in the class joking about how the Hydrogen and Oxide went to the Science lab or something, Its stuff Normal people wouldnt get but they do... thats just how I view it. But I certainly believe God has a sense of humor.

No. God just went click. -Robin Williams.

Its true. We dont know how creation happened except for God took 6 days to do it. Then took the 7th to rest.

Ive always wondered if what scientists call the "Big Bang" is our being created by God.

I always used to laugh at the family guy episode where they talk about God and his room-mate and they are arm wrestling and when God wins he is happy his is still undefeated and he farts and boom everything was created... Kinda sacrilegious BUT still kinda funny... maybe God even laughed about that... who knows!?

The Bible itself, the holy book for all the Christian religions, isn't even the complete works of the texts. A bunch of men got together in Rome and decided which texts were in, and which were out.

This is an extremely important point to any discussion of the authority of the Bible. Its books were picked and cannonized by humans, humans with specific interests to protect. As such Basing all arguments on the Bible loses a lot of validity in my eyes.

However, saying that this was done in Rome is not correct, and Squanto, your arguments are often too well formed and intelligent for me to let you keep saying that. Much of the official formalizing of Catholic (and Eastern Orothodox) cannon and ritual was done during the reign Roman emperor Constantine in 324. But though he was Roman, the actual decisions were made in Constantinoble, and in Trent and Nicea and the Councils of Trent and Nicea.

The more you know...

It is true a bunch of men got together and decided what should be in there.. and Mormons have added the book of Mormon and Susannah into their bible... which both of those books (which i have read) Go completely against everything else in the Bible. And I think thats something you should look at. Some books were left out because they go against everything Jesus stood for and what not. Jesus did say beware of False Prophets. I tend to look at those books in that way... But you are indeed right men got together and chose which to keep and which to throw... BUT we as humans prolly wont know which was supposed to be in there and which wasnt until we meet God and can ask him... haha

Personally, I think I'm God's favorite person to play practical jokes on. At least it seems that way. He seems amused, but I'm usually not.

After six pages of huffing and puffing about having a Christian Bible study thread there looks to be precious little Bible studing goin' on.

I guess we are a pretty pagan lot.

Just as well.
