Has anyone ever had their political opinion changed in a message board discussion? It only serves to further polarize.

Let me summarize:

Liberal response: It was an inspiring speech, and I have hope that real change could still come if only the obstructionist, homophobic, fundamentalist Republicans would stop blocking legislation to fix the problems Obama inherited from George W. Bush.

Conservative response: It was more of the same empty rhetoric, but the fact remains that he is trying to stuff big government socialism down our throats and bankrupt the country. The election of Brown in Massachusetts proves that Americans want no part of this activism, and it's only a matter of time before the decadent, anti-American, atheist Democrats are run out of power.

Go Sabres. :D

Yeah, pretty much that.

I haven't really bothered to read or watch the speech. I've looked at some of the commentary, and much of it was what you described and what I expected.

The Chimp convinced me to not wear fur. Well...I never really wore fur before, so maybe not.

Whatever happened to the Chimp (he had so many different names, but usually some kind of primate)?

He was banned-for-life probably a year ago, maybe? Unrelenting belligerence and hostility despite multiple warnings ultimately did him in if I recall correctly.

He was banned from the sabres.com boards for repeatedly antagonizing Europeans.
He went over to LGS and HFboards I believe.

No one wants to tell me why the President lied?
I noticed at the speech, Eric Holder didn't even shake hands with the Supreme court justices even though he was sitting right next to them...then the President proceeds to lash into the court in his speech.
Note to President Obama: The other two branches of government aren't intimidated by you.

What are you accusing him of lying about?

He said the Court decision about corporate campaign finance would "open the floodgates" for corporate and foreign corporate influence.

However the case they just settled did not address foreign entities at all and therefore those laws are unchanged.
It's still illegal for foreign individuals or corporations to donate to campaigns at all.

He lied and Chief Justice Roberts was noticeably shaking his head in disagreement.

Correction...It was Justice Alito that was visibly upset with his remarks
This is the part that's a lie:
Quote:
"Last week, the Supreme Court reversed a century of law to open the floodgates for special interests — including foreign corporations — to spend without limit in our elections," Obama said. "Well I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests, or worse, by foreign entities. They should be decided by the American people, and that’s why I’m urging Democrats and Republicans to pass a bill that helps to right this wrong."

He mentioned it twice. That's not a mistake.

Sure, it's illegal for foreign corporations to contribute directly.

However, what stops a US based corporation with foreign arms from shifting money around and doing just that?

With that decision, it can happen. Take News Corp. They're an American based corporation (now) , with significant foreign interests. What's to stop them from selling ads to Chinese interests in a quid pro quo arrangement to make sure that money was donated to Candidate Y?

Nothing.

If anything, I think he's guilty of oversimplifying things rather than intentionally lying.

What stopped them prior to last weeks decision?

You're not following me.
Nothing regarding foreign money in US politics changed with their decision last week.
Nothing.

To characterize that decision as impacting a separate part of existing law is a lie.

I'm following you quite clearly.

No, nothing has changed to allow foreign corporations to contribute directly. His statement was incorrect, and you would think that someone of his oration skills would have done better.

However, you can't deny that the ruling did open the door for foreign money to come into the US political process via US corporations. I believe that's the point Obama was trying to get across, but just did a poor job doing it.

The only reason I'm being so harsh and calling him a liar, is because he's a constitutional scholar.
Anyone else I'd let it slide as simple demagoguery, but not him.

It's a fair point. I can't disagree that he should have known that fact.

To be honest, I'm not a fan of him making any statements about the decision like that with the court members sitting there. (I wish they didn't attend these speeches though.)

He was talking down to Congress and the Court like they were unruly children.
It was quite off-putting and a bit distasteful I thought.

Huge corporate and special interest money has always flowed virtually unabated to presidential candidates, and will continue to do so with or without this ruling. There is nothing new under the sun. The upside of this ruling is that perhaps it will actually create more transparency.

Interesting article from the LA Times: http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la- ... ?track=rss

We'll see how much Aresenio finger is bitching when the corporate contributions start flooding in around re-election time when he's the favorite to win. Fuck him.

Hey look...another bald faced lie

Quote:
“We face a deficit of trust — deep and corrosive doubts about how Washington works that have been growing for years. To close that credibility gap, we have to take action on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue — to end the outsized influence of lobbyists; to do our work openly; to give our people the government they deserve.”

A day after bashing lobbyists, President Barack Obama’s administration has invited K Street insiders to join private briefings on a range of topics addressed in Wednesday’s State of the Union.

God damned disgusting hypocrite.
I really feel sorry for the people who listen to this jackass.

I didn't even know it was on until my buddy called and told me. I was like "oh, well the Sabres were on so...you know"
