I was doing the dishes today when I thought of these trades that we could make at the deadline.

To Buffalo
Bourque
Sarich

To Calgary
Roy

To Buffalo
Matt Stajan

To Tor

the first one if i'm going after a calgary defenseman i would much rather have phaneuf, younger, tougher.
and to the second one i'd rather trade to get fisher out of ottawa than stajan, only because we own the leafs, fisher kills us, and stajan would probably be a rental player as i don't think darcy would resign him. but not terrible ideas.

Calgary needs scoring. We need a stud to play with Myers, and also a PP QB.
To Flames: D.Stafford, N.Gerbe, 2nd rd pick
To Sabres: D.Phaneuf

Ottawa could use some cap space to add a veteran for a run. We need a more responsible 2nd line center who would play better in Lindy's system.
To Sens: D.Roy, 4th rd pick
To Sabres: M.Fisher

Panthers need veteran defensemen. We now need a right winger to play with M.Fisher on the second line.
To Cats: H.Tallinder, T.Lydman,
To Sabres: N.Horton,

Call up Weber.

Hecht-Connolly-Pominville
Vanek-Fisher-Horton
Mac-Kennedy-Grier
Ellis-Goose-Kaleta

Phaneuf-Myers
Sekera-Weber
Rivet-Butler

Edit: Lines and deals edited

i could live with that but do you think stafford will have more value or mac Arthur. seeing as mac is putting up more goals of present. As well if you are leaving kennedy off the list are you assuming he is being sat or is he traded. And can gerbe survive out west ( I say this b/c the GM of calgary is going to take gerbe's size into consideration, as the rest of the league probably does). As well you may have to part with a d prospect as well to get that second off of florida as it aims to be early, plus horton is probably one of florida's biggest bargaining chips. that would give us a nice future though, with phanuef and myers as the elite d-pair. all we'd have to do in the off season then is sign biron and resign grier.

I know adding this would make it four moves that let's face it darcy do four trades i must be drinking the XR again. but send say macArthur + a 5th or montador or sekera (his shot pisses me off. it seems to soft) for whitney. that adds more leadership on the forward front as well but we might be getting into a bit of an upheaval and that hasn't worked well for teams.

Stafford has (heaven help me) more potential and has shown more pizazz. He's been more productive over his career, and unlike Mac, can score highlight-reel goals. Oops, I fucked that up - I'll re-edit my lines, but Mair isn't on the team when I'm done. Gerbe I think can survive out west - he's like a poor-man's Theo Fleury in the town that's loved Theo for years.

And you're right about Horton, but I'm just spitballin cuz I never take part in these threads cuz I always tend to not think everything through.

thats probably why the rest of us are here to double check. so that things can be talked out and irresistible deals can be thought out.

Well with Horton we would need to wait until he became healthy, he broke a bone in his leg and is out about 6-8 weeks, basically he won't be ready until around two weeks after the Olympics end.

Ok, So I'm Darcy on Deadline day, assuming we continue to succeed, and stay healthy;

I call up Dallas first,
To:
Clarke MacArthur, and 4th round pick
In return:
Steve Ott (UFA to be)

Then I move on to NY Rangers:
To:
Stafford, Sekera and 1st (the draft doesnt have many first rounders that fit Buffalo's draft molds) 3rd from Boston (Glenn Sather loves to stick it to the Bruins
In return:
Chris Higgins
Ryan Callahan

Then on to Florida:
Our 3rd round pick, and Lydman
To Buffalo
Jordan Leopold (PP QB and experienced veteran)

After the deadline our team would look like:

Higgins-Connolly-Pommers
Vanek-Roy-Callahan
Hecht-Ott-Grier
Kennedy/Ellis-Goose-Kaleta

Rivet-Butler
Myers-Hank
Montador-Leopold

Miller
La-lame

I dont know about you guys, but I think that's a gritty team, that could score and survive anything the East could throw at us...thoughts?

I like it a lot, but I think that's a lot to give up for Higgins and Callahan. I like both players, but.....

Mac and a 4th isn't too bad. I'd do it. Though it might just take Mac. Not sure the pick would be necessary.

Very bad. 6 goals, 8 assists. Though he did have 52 points (27-25) with Montreal two years ago.

this might make us look more like sellers than buyers. but i wouldn't mind us trading to get fisher. then i like the callahan idea but would rather let NY keep higgins. i was thinking this offseason Volchenkov is an UFA, Letang is a RFA, Biron is an UFA. what if we make the move to clear up space say a couple picks while bringing in guys like callahan and fisher who will contribute to the benefit of the team as a whole then go after a DFD like Volchenkov, big physical, and Letang in the off season. Letang is able to be the PP QB and has a ring, and is defensively solid, plus wicked in the shoot out, and of course marty as a decent back up. because i can't really see darcy make a lot of moves if any. which the offseason would be hard to believe as well seeing as letang will probably want mike green money which is what you have to hope for so pittsburgh cannot afford him, though odds are they'd let gonchar walk and take re-sign letang. I just think fisher fits the buffalo schematic and i would love him off the senators. i could probably talk myself out of volchenkov as he might say no b/c darcy lowballs him or we don't have a lot of russians.

As for the draft i've been a bit pre occupied creating my board for the bills(even though the bills will probably fuck up the draft especially with modrak still at the helm, who the fuck picks maybin over orakpo and cushion. but i think that martindale C kid could be something. I also like Telegin RW and would not be against looking at one of the top tier goalies. As the draft gets closer and more statistical info is available i can make a better assessment.

Higgins plays on a line with Drury and Callahan. Neither are strong passers, and they play against other teams top lines as a checking line. It's no wonder his stats are down, but he gives a ton of effort every night, and would really be a dangerious weapon when paired with a guy like Connolly or Pomminville.

I honestly think you could just give up Stafford, Sekera and a 3rd to get The three, but I didn't want to hear people bitch a moan about what Sekera's trade value is.

As for MacArthur straight up for Ott, probably could happen, but again, I didn't much feel like listening to all the bitching about how Ott is so much more of a phyiscal player, and brings more to the table, blah blah blah.

More often than not, we as a group underestimate the trade value of our players, because we put certain players under a microscope (cough Kotalik, MacArthur, Kalinin, Hecht cough) and while they do have their down moments, each of them offers a unique point of upside.

Honestly, my real offers would look something like:

Mac for Ott and a 5th from Dallas (Mac RFA signed under light contract, and wont earn much in arbitration)

Stafford, Sekera, Boston's 3rd to NYR for Callahan, and Higgins (having down year, lesser value than what he was bought for) Stafford straight up for Callahan is very fair, Sekera and 3rd for Higgins, not quite Scott Gomez value, but at the same time, Higgins isn't producing Scott Gomez points.

To Florida 3rd and Lydman for Leopold, (Florida is out of it, picking up an extra pick to build for the future is a viable option)

higgins may work hard, and had past success, but the fact that he isnt just struggling, hes downright awful this year doesnt suggest we should trade the effective, though inconsistent stafford. he is at least a half a point a game player.
