I own one of the recalled models...a 2007 Camry XLE. Scary shit. Defective gas pedal sticks, and several people have been killed as a result. If you own a Toyota from 2007 on read these FAQ:

I own an 09 Corolla. From what I can tell the recall is voluntary and only recommended if you experience the gas pedal issue...if you're not dead.

There was a recall that had something to do with brake performance in cold weather too. Getting that fixed when it gets inspected in Feb. even though I've experienced no problems to speak of.

you know, i read a story that people (that happened to be from california) were calling 911 to tell the operators that their accelerator was stuck and they were still driving. how frickin stupid can you be? If you can call 911, you can either a) hit your brakes (they will stop the car), b)shift into park (who cares if you drop your transmission? would you rather die?, c) turn your ignition off, or d) use the emergency brake.

it's almost like darwinian evolution.

In most of these cases, the accelerator stuck and the brakes failed.
I also believe most modern automatic transmissions won't engage park at speed to compensate for idiot drivers.

You can't shift into park unless the brakes are applied in most Auto trannys, you could however shift it into 2 or one, or turn the ignition off or emergency brake too.

or shift the car into neutral would also work.

One word...PANIC. If you listen to that 911 call, the guy is freaking out (as well as he should be) but he is not listening to the calltaker, he is just yelling. The guy was in a complete shutdown and nothing would have brought him back. I'm not blaming the guy, some people just do not handle a life or death situation well.

e-brakes are typically on a second system that is isolated, so it never fails. you can shift an auto into neutral, at least, and some will still shift into park. the ignition can still be turned off...yes, power steering will be lost...but it's a lot safer.

E-brakes are normally a cable driven system that locks the rear wheels, but if you just rip it or stomp it to the floor you're going to wreck.

And if you're in a panic like that guy apparently was then he would have just stomped it down and lost all control.

if it locks the real wheels (and it does) the chances for accident are very low. it's like running with a bungee cord on your waist...it drags you down to stop. if you are turning and going at a high rate of speed, just like any time you hit the brakes, you will wreck.

Ummm no, all vehicles have ABS, which prevents the wheels from locking up even if your braking and turning at high speeds.

The E-brake will lock the rears up and won't always just drag you to a stop. If you lose your brakes you slowly apply the ebrake, you never just slam it, because any slight turn of the wheel you could lose all control of your vehicle.
