If the rest of the league held Phaneuf in the same regard many of us do, he'd have fetched a higher return.

lol. it is understandable the poor season and issues that have been with phaneuf but if sean avery can fetch a high market value, then a guy who actually has talent there somewhere should be valuable.

Avery didn't fetch anything, wasn't he claimed off of waivers to go back to NYC?

I mean he got a good contract but that was in the midst of the ridiculous and unnecessary contracts given out to players.

Good thing some of us aren't a GM in the NHL, we'd be getting robbed or selling out to try and get players and would probably ruin our team.

Again; should have, but didn't.

More to this than we know. Apparently the other GM's do know....

Most can say if Buffalo could have traded Hecht, Stafford, Lydman and someone else for Phaneuf most would say do the deal. You also have to look at something else in this deal that their is a 6'6" defensive prospect in the deal that played with Myers in world juniors last year. I think the Leafs got a great deal today which should have never happened. Toronto wanted to shake things up and then landed Phaneuf on a platter.

Yep, it would appear to be a good deal had it ever been considered, or gone down.

Well pair Schenn with Phaneuf and you got a decent pairing also. A good mentor for Schenn too.

They're Leafs fans.

They could traded the top 6 forwards for a jug of Powerade and most Leafs fans would tell you that they have a solid chance to make the playoffs.

This may not be the only trade to happen today or tomorrow...Brooksie is reporting once a couple of snags clear up, Kotalik is on his way to the WC. I'll post as soon as I see something go down.

This was probably the funniest thread I've ever read. Makinitlookmean said Phaneuf over Kabrele. LMAO.
Phaneuf got paid for potential and hasn't lived up to it.
Calgary's core is getting up there in age. They need to make another push for the cup cause its getting time for them to either win or re-build. This trade frees up space and they bring in a versatile top 9 center, a goal scoring top six winger, an energy player and a young mobile reilable puck moving dman. Only problem with this trade for Calgary is that they didnt acquire a playmaking center. But I imagine that is in the works.

As for the deal with ANA. Its essentially a salary dump both ways.

Speaking of trades, The Rangers have sent Alice Kotalik home, telling her they will trade her. It is thought to be a West Coast team.

I said it in the offseason, and I'll say it again; why the hell would anyone want this uncompetitive piece of shit on their team? As a fourth liner for shootouts? She doesn't fit the profile of a fourth liner. Maybe at closer to league minimum she would be palatable, but not at $3 million per.

Funny thing is, whatever the deal was broke down, so now Kotalik is in complete lingo - the Rags won't play him, and they can't trade him, either!

One rumour had it being part of a package deal involving Sheldon Souray. His injury Saturday night has put the deal on hold - allegedly.......

I saw Mike Harrington talking about that on Twitter...I'm definitely keeping abreast of this situation

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/ind ... run_pierre

per ESPN:

At first, Burke's advances to Flames GM Darryl Sutter got the cold shoulder. Sutter, as he told me earlier this month, had no desire to move Phaneuf. But an ensuing nine-game winless streak changed all that. The pressure was on for Sutter to make a move, and Burke made sure to exploit that.

This is why Burke was brought in to run this sad-sack franchise -- because he had the reputation and acumen of a GM who could pull off these types of moves. Kessel was also a big acquisition, but a move that right now looks decidedly tilted in favor of the Bruins thanks to a pair of first-round picks going Boston's way, and the June 2010 pick looking like a top-three overall selection.

But there isn't a sense that Burke overpaid this time around. No offense to Stajan, Hagman, Mayers and White, but they are complementary players.

The kicker in all this is some people believe the prospect Toronto got in the deal, the 6-foot-6, 20-year-old defenseman Aulie, is headed for a good NHL career. "He's going to play 15 years in the NHL," said one NHL executive Sunday.

And for the last two years he's played poorly. I watch a lot of Flames Canucks and Oilers games. I know the players on each team. I think this was a good trade for both teams. But an underachieving only offensive dman at 6.5 per(who reportedly is a douche and a cancer) over an overachieving veteran dman at 4.25. Yeah your right Phaneuf all the way. Kaberle has 38 assists to Phaneuf's 12. And kaberle is on th leafs. I didnt know they've scored 38 goals as a team.
However, was Phaneuf a beast 2 years ago? Yeah. Has he been since? Far from it. Does he have the talent to be a great defenceman? Fuck yes. But too say Phaneuf over Kaberle right now especially at their price tags is ridiculous. Get over the Phaneuf of 2 years ago and watch the Phaneuf of now.

maybe not that far. they have kandri waiting in the wings, kessel up front who is a 30+ goal scorer if healthy, gustavsson, who i think is going to be an absolute fantastic goalie, giggy, who won a stanley cup and a conn smyth, so he brings it in the playoffs, and now neon dion. lots of spaces to be filled, but the tough ones to fill are already filled or being filled.

As an avid watcher of Kadri the guy is not much to write home about, he makes way too many bonehead toe drags that results in a ton of turnovers. He might (keyword might) become a good 2nd line player but if he is one of there better prospects Toronto is in for an extremely long rebuild as the leafs are very thin on prospects. If the had this years and next years 1st round picks they would be golden.
