Rangers-Flames deal in holding pattern
Monday, 02.01.2010 / 2:11 PM / 2010 Trade Deadline By Adam Kimelman - NHL.com Staff Writer Am I staying or going?

That's the question a few players are asking themselves today, as a rumored trade between the New York Rangers and Calgary Flames is on hold, with no one quite sure what is going to happen next.

On Sunday, in the hours after the Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs pulled their blockbuster deal that landed defenseman Dion Phaneuf in Toronto and brought four players back to Calgary, the Flames seemed to have another deal lined up -- they were reportedly set to trade centers Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust to the Rangers.

The package going back to Calgary, however, has been up for debate. The New York Post reported the Rangers offered right wing Ales Kotalik and rookie defenseman Matt Gilroy. According to the Post, however, getting Ian White from the Leafs in the Phaneuf deal made Gilroy less appealing to the Flames. So according to multiple outlets, the Rangers offered forward Christopher Higgins along with Kotalik instead.

According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, the Flames backed out of that deal late Sunday night because they thought they needed Jokinen in the lineup Monday night when the Philadelphia Flyers visit the Pengrowth Saddledome (9:30 p.m. ET). There also were questions about whether Kotalik would waive his no-trade clause to accept a deal to Calgary.

Jokinen, and probably Prust, are expected to be in the lineup for Monday's game, but that doesn't necessarily mean the deal is off. If both players come through healthy, the teams could recommence talks.

So where do things stand? Right now, Jokinen and Prust remain in Calgary, and Higgins and Kotalik are in New York. Their bags might be packed, but their destination is unknown.

I would love to see The Rags send Alice to Hartford, and let her ride the busses.

Daryl Sutter should be fired. I know that Jokinen is horrible this but why the fuck would you want Kotalik? He is just as bad and Higgins?? The guy is massively overrated. Plus you have to feel for Prust, the guy has been once to Phoenix for Jokinen than back to Calgary and then to NY. :x Prust was Calgary's hardest worker the Flames had this year and now they get guys who have no work in them at all. Calgary is going to be right down to where Edmonton is by the end of the year.

IMO:

Being forced to watch the Flames on Sportsnet west alot, I have notice one MAJOR thing about that roster (pre - big trades). They were a very complacent team. Like no matter what they did they're spot was guaranteed. I can't speak as to whether Phaneuf was a locker room cancer or not, because I don't pay attention to alot of rumors out of Calgary. But, he was a physical defense man with offensive upside, struggling to put the puck in the net. He's been off for atleast 2 seasons. I hope the guy finds the spark he needs in Toronto, because then he would live up to his Norris hype. I can't speak much for Jokinen. I don't particularly like the guy that much. I do hope they are making cap room for Kovalchuk though. That team might be exciting again.

Shortly after playing more than 15 minutes for the Calgary Flames, Olli Jokinen became the newest member of the New York Rangers.

Jokinen, 31, along with forward Brandon Prust, were officially traded to the Blueshirts after Calgary's 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night in exchange for forwards Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins.

Jokinen has 11 goals and 24 assists in 56 games with the Flames this season. He was acquired by the Flames from Phoenix at last season's trade deadline. Prust, 25, has one goal, four assists and 98 penalty minutes. The pair is expected to make its debut with the Rangers on Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

"It was a long day," Jokinen said after playing his last game with Calgary. "Obviously, I heard everything (Sunday) night. I was kind of surprised. I obviously wasn't expecting to get moved. It's part of the business. I've got to move on. It's tough.

"I settled my family over here. I was hoping I could stay here the rest of my career. That's the way it goes. It goes with the salary. You make $5 million, 11 goals is not going to cut it. It's definitely a slap in the face to get traded. But this is what we do for a living."

Jokinen spoke with Flames GM Darryl Sutter soon after Monday night's loss and was informed of the deal. It didn't give Jokinen and Prust -- who played less than eight minutes against Philadelphia -- much time to say goodbye to their teammates before each quickly headed home and packed a bag for L.A., where the Rangers are finishing a three-game road trip.

"Olli was one of my better friends on the team," Flames winger Eric Nystrom said. "It's tough seeing this side of the business, but they're trying to get our team going in the right direction and if these are the moves they have to make, then as players we just have to accept it. We don't have much of a say."
Prust was drafted in the third round (No. 70) by the Flames in the 2004 Entry Draft. He has two goals, six assists and 231 penalty minutes in 89 NHL games.

"I'm looking forward to the opportunity of going to the big city and playing in Madison Square Garden," Prust said. "I've never played there, so I'm looking forward to it. I'm sad to be leaving all my buddies here and a city that's become my home. But at the same time, I'm moving forward and I'm looking forward to it."

Higgins was acquired by the Rangers last summer in the deal that sent Scott Gomez to the Montreal Canadiens. He had six goals and eight assists in 55 games. Kotalik signed a three-year deal worth $9 million with New York prior to the start of the season. He had just eight goals and 14 assists in 45 contests.

"This business is about winning," said Jokinen, who will become an unrestricted free agent this summer. "We've won once in the last 13, 14 games. We all knew there was going to be changes."

BTW it's a done deal.

Kotalik can't get into Canada...there aren't any flights directly to Calgary, and he can't make use of a layover because of the necessary immigration paper work that's waiting for him at Calgary!

Can we hang this on the wall in the Sabre's locker room? As big of an asshole people say Jokinen is, at least he's realistic.

Calgary just needed to shake things up. And I disagree - Phaneuf and Jokinen were bad locker room guys, and both have large salaries.

Higgins was good a couple years ago. Maybe he'll wake up again.
