Zilla, I don't think that your post was necessary. There was a lot of consternation on the subject, and throwing a log on the fire doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

The thread and topic are here for people to use if they so choose. If they chose to not, that is their choice too.

Whoa, there, Spunky. You were the one that wanted a thread to do Bible study and I came to your defense arguing that you are entitled. I'm just feeling a little burned that after all that back and forth arguing (in which I sided against some people for whom I have a great deal of respect) it turned out that you weren't really serious after all.

This thread looks as if its main purpose was just to get people riled up, because you never did follow through on what you said you were going to do.

If you want to take your marbles and go somewhere else, you are welcome to, but don't start whining and pouting about antagonistic posts, when you created an entire thread that was nothing but.

Because it wasnt supposed to just be ME doing it.. there are other people here who were involved. But fine, you make a fair point,. Ill be more involved

"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff - they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long."
Psalms 23

This is a very powerful bible verse. and I think a lot of people would agree with me, because this verse is used at a lot of funerals. I think it brings comfort to those who are mourning and just lost someone they care about a lot. But sometimes it can be more than just comfort when your mourning, it can also be comfort when your just not feeling in tip top shape and other things like that. Thoughts?

Rut, this is in no way criticizing you, but is there a bible verse that tells me to take charge of my own life and "get shit done", so to speak?

I guess a great part of my distaste for the bible is the amount of faith that you're supposed to put so much into god's hands, when you can just as well do it yourself. Death is looked at as something to almost look forward to, but don't kill yourself, cuz that's a big no-no.

Lol... Um... I know your not criticizing me but do you remember which verse it is? lol. If I see the verse I might be able to comment. But I mean, the way I see it... the bible says, like, folllow God, live a good life etc etc... But it doesnt say "you cant have fun" I mean I'm sure God wants us to be happy and wants us to have fun, but I guess its all in a matter of how you have fun.

And as for death, the way I see it... I dont condone suicide... but Im not catholic either... see with catholics its "if you commit suicide you go straight to hell" and to my knowledge there is nothing in the Bible that says you cant... but ya... idk... I dont think people should do it... I think they should try and live their life to the fullest they can...

Thats pretty much my two cents about it lol.

No, I don't know a verse, I'm asking if you knew of one. I grew up Roman Catholic, so yeah, suicide=hell, in that world.

Ohhh I mis-read your post :) haha... um as far as I know there isnt really a verse that says. "Do things your way" Cuz what Ive always been taught is that God has a plan for each person, and its up to us if we chose to follow it. like... its our choice if we want to do our own thing or try to live a good life, and what not... So ya... I dont think there is a verse that says get shit done. But I know that we are supposed to live life to the fullest and follow God at the same time... its hard but people do manage it.

NY; the Bible and its proponents are not big fans of a "think for yourself" mentality. You won't find anything that suggests anything other than "do what I say"

Well everything is open for your own interpretation. So I mean its not one of those situations where you are told what to do to every little detail, but things are open to interpretation.

the thing is
we believe, in view of salvation, they we have been saved, are working towards salvation, and hope to be saved

the thing with suicide(/abortion/assisted suicide) is, it is murder, which violates the commandments, and it is a grave sin

grave sin seperates ourselves from God, and we make God our enemy, but God still loves everyone

also, just for refrence

im fairly sure your a Protestant, but what demonimation?

I like to keep it simple. God gave us the ten commandments. He also gave us 'free will' to do what we want. If you choose to live in the guidelines of the commandments, which, truth be told, is very hard on some of them, then you are living the way God wants, but if you choose to live life your own way, then you accept the consequences, I guess? He's not going to 'curse' you or anything, If you see the err in your ways, then God will forgive you, if you really mean it.

As far as "doing it yourself", God is also there to give you strength if you ask him, if you feel you are in over your head. Some would say its just you empowering yourself, but I like to believe that when I pray for strength, things seem to fall into place easier.

I don't have time right now to get into it further, but will probably tomorrow.

So I will start I guess with prolly one of the most famous verses in the Bible.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.

I think that verse is pretty self explanatory, or at least I think it is.

Rutledge, I think you are correct that this verse is pretty self explanatory and not one that most people struggle with. If I could offer a verse that a good friend of mine, who is a practicing Christian, struggles with:

(Ephesians 5:22-23) Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church...

My friend is a strong, independent woman whose husband is a traveling saleman, so she is use to running the family while he is away on business trips. When he comes home she has a difficult time conforming to this passage of scripture.

So, my question for discussion (if you choose to respond) is two-fold. First, is there a way to interpret this passage and others like it in a way that conforms to our modern sensabilites about equality between the sexes, and secondly, how do you deal with biblical passages that conflict with your own sense of right and wrong?

Although I am not a Christian, I like the idea that we are all "subject" to one another. Wives are subject to their husbands, but husbands are also subject to their wives. Perhaps, the passage can be looked at as the different duties we own to each other as man and woman?

(Rutledge, I hope this gets the discussion back onto the original path you intended.) :)

To be honest, I who have never been married and only had 1 gf in my entire 19 years of existance :P lol view this as it cuts both ways... Women should acknowledge that the Man is the head of the household and he should be treated with such respect, BUT Men shouldnt abuse that power and treat his wife like trash. He should love her and care for her and other things. So It cuts both ways. But a relationship should be a 50-50 thing. Men shouldnt do things without consulting a wife (unless its a gift) and Women shouldnt take things into her own hands whenever she feels like it, she should consult the husband as well and they should agree upon something they both can handle and deal with. Just my two cents of course :)

What if its a BDSM Lifestyle relationship? :P

I'm pretty sure this thread was meant for serious discussion, so if you're not going to contribute with something of value I would personally appreciate it if you kept your thoughts to yourself and demonstrate a little respect for the OP.

Thanks.

Good thing I'm in a good mood or I'd lock right now, but if I did, then I'd/We'd have to deal with 30 fucking threads about Mods abusing their power/freedom of speech/ and all that nonsense. I don't even want to get started on the Catholic thing or I'd have to say I contributed to a very controversial thread. Should we let this one die? I think so

One of my favorite movies of all-time is Jesus Christ Superstar and it has nothing to do with me being religious (I'm not). But it's such a great film! I have the soundtrack of it on my iPod and I saw the live stage production of it in Rochester a few years ago. Ted Neeley has been playing Jesus longer than Jesus was alive! Crazy to think about...but he plays a damn good Jesus and he's still sexy and belting out the tunes after all these years.
