Generalizing can be slippery slope sometimes. Just something to keep in mind.

I think minorities get the publicity of the news; I mean, you would never, as a "white" person, get the support to start an organization that would take special funding to advance people of your race that a minority will. This is my opinion, yes, and if I'm unaware of someone successfully doing this, please, let me know. The NAACP has had its place and time; I honestly believe it's over though. My immediate supervisor is Dominican, my coworker is African-American. The team lead is Cuban, and our quality assurance lady is Laotian. The program manager is white. I'd say 40% of the people I work with are minorities, and the program I work for is very technical.

Equal rights was achieved many moons ago. Equal Opportunity, however, is a completely different fight. I honestly believe that EO has also been achieved, however, the equal desire, equal motivation, equal role models, those may be lacking.

I guess white people should be thankful they never needed any organizations to defend their human rights(which includes opportunity in this country).

I know you're a smart guy, but I think you, I, rut, and his SOC101 class all realize that some people are STILL discriminated against. A lot of it is more softly spoken of and hidden than it has ever been, but eliminated it is not.

Rut, you caught me after a particularly contentious department meeting, so I unloaded on you in a way that I shouldn't have.

I'll try to take ETC's advice and focus my anger on Ottawa.

Sorry.

Some people ARE still discriminated against, but the question now is WHY? Does it have to do with their color? I'd answer NO to that. I realize that this is coming across as prejudice, and quite possibly racist, but I'm trying to apply critical thinking now, and the only thing I can think of is that some stereotypes are being perpetuated. Equal opportunity is the gateway to making those stereotypes a thing of the past, but how do these parts of society take advantage of it?

I guess my outrage isn't over the article, but the practice itself, of continuing to bring up discrimination. And I think the author's pissed because it's a cover of garbage actresses :/

Continuing to bring up discrimination will continue to happen as long as discrimination continues. Think this nation is over discrimination and that we really do all get an equal shake? I don't. Look at the prison population. It is disproportionately represented by minorities (they are a much higher % of the prison population than the general population). Why do you think that is? Is it because minorities tend to be criminals more often, or is it because they are more likely to be pulled over, arrested, and prosecuted? Look at the government, are minorities properly represented there? (and yes, I know we have a black president, that doesn't trump all else however) Look at the magazine covers next time you're in the supermarket. What do you see? Now look around the store and at the others in line with you. Do the magazine covers look like a representation of the people you see around you?

The idea that discrimination is over and done with is quite wrong, and indeed potentially dangerous.

Even the census and business demographics can prove there is discrimination(or at least the after effects of it). Like he said, when things are equal, you will know it, because any semblances of inequality will be gone.

its not how we feel now that cause that, its the failure of Reconstruction

after slavery, they were all free and had no jobs anymore, and the system set up (sharecroppinjg, and the like) screwed any chance they had at being educated (along with how the whites treated the coloureds), and they then were denied the chance to improve themselves

however, even with that over, they still dont have education as much on a whole, and with no education/money, your gonna syeal stuff and find a good family(as, not trying to generalize, drugs have destroyed families), they join gangs and they get into prision and cause violence

I agree here Montalo. The higher crime rate among blacks is a product of societal structure. And that's exactly what I mean when I say that everyone is not given the "fair shake" that traditional rah rah US propaganda would lead you to believe.

But don't kid yourself about that being the only reason. Racial profiling is alive and well among law enforcement all around ths country

Before we go bashing our country too hard, we are still the land of the free. As long as there is progress, I'm happy. It's when we let political parties stall progress that we lose. No matter what though, given time, justice will prevail. These fuckers can't hold on FOREVER can they? Forever is a really long time.

Racial profile exists because there's method to the madness, and the "proof is in the pudding".

As far as white people feeling "guilty", I don't. Should African Americans feel guilty about the use of Indian slaves in Africa? Do you feel guilty when you hear about someone driving drunk and killing someone? In my eyes, the parity is there. I, in NO way, NO how, had ANYTHING to do with slavery. I also don't discriminate, I definitely evaluate before making decisions.
