So far today it's tanked roughly 250 points. Something to keep an eye on.

Well it's not as bad as when it was tanking 1000 or more points day last December.

Global markets were down today because of concerns about some European countries struggling with deficits. It happens.

Fear moves the market quite a bit. :)

I thought about posting it was all due to the loss last night.

Finished right at the 10,000 mark, dropping over 260 points. Not good...not good at all.

well that and economists were expecting 10,000 jobs added in the US this week and instead got -9000.

But I'm not worried, Zilla has told me we've had 3 quarters of growth and the Democrats have it under control.

the market has increased in value for almost a year now. one day of decline, albeit a steep one, is not reason to panic.

You don't watch the markets do you?

We were at 10,725 two weeks ago before Obama opened his mouth about a new tax on banks.

700 points in two weeks is, actually, something that should raise eyebrows.

That's because Wall Street overreacts to anything that could hurt profits.

Government announces plan to enforce banking regulation? OH NOES!! LESS PROFITS!!! Market shits.

Health care bill in the Senate looks dead? YAY!! MORE PROFITS!!! Market rises.

This is the messed up world where if some schmuck analyst expects a company to turn $100M profit in a quarter, but they come in at $95M, their stock will drop 10%.

The stock market is a very fickle and corrupt place.

Excuse me ma'am, but that's $7.85 for that loaf of bread, not $1.85.

:D

Maybe, but the direct correlation between the President announcing his "responsibility tax" and our latest 700 point freefall can not be denied. I actually watched that speech and a stock ticker side by side that morning.

Hey Mr. Obama...want to help the market? STFU and GBTW.

all because it's driven by speculation...not finished data.

There was also a direct correlation between the death of the public option and an uptick in health care stocks that pulled the entire market up.

Shouldn't Congress STFU and GBTW too?

i watch the markets pretty close. after a year of increase, a slight decrease to keep the keel even is normal. it is, as others have said, driven by speculation.

Hmmm.... and who was president when the Dow lost over 4,000 points between May and November 2008? Did you hear me blaming the president then? Maybe I said W. was PARTIALLY to blame, but I never would have laid all that at his feet. Also I seem to remember you saying the president doesn't really have that much control over the markets at that time. What has changed your mind?

Abso-freakin-lutely
but those egos need stroking so I won't be holding my breath.

My mind hasn't changed. In this specific incident (ok, I'll give you the last 450 points) roughly 250 points were, in fact, a direct response to the Presidents words.

Rarely do we have such a President who behind the scenes gives away the farm to wall street then come out the next morning and beat them with a baseball bat. It's astounding.

We're getting screwed on both fronts.

They always over-react, then sometimes even decide it's better now. They may very well do that once they realize it may add stability to their investments in the long run. Remember, the government bail-out was a COMPLETELY new animal. It's better to rely on proper regulation than it is anything that lucky.

I'm pissed just because it was so unfair to "bail-out" a shareholder. I never got any of my bad stocks "bailed-out". So unfair and bs. Now, if I HAD been lucky enough to hold those stocks, I'd probably be a happy sob too!

...and you know who I feel sorriest for? The people who took their retirement savings out of the market at the bottom, because they feared they'd lose it all. Ya, makes me want to RELY on the stock market to eat in the future?? Want to hear the funniest principle in investing. It's called, "profit taking". It's when they inflate the market with your retirement mutual funds, then brokers swoop in, and liquidate them into cash. The market then is "adjusted". The whole thing is pretty much bs.
