The Sabres have had a 1st overall pick, 1970.
Also, teams that don't get great picks build from within "and Free Agency". I have seen Buffalo do that only twice in 40 years.
Relying on the current roster to get better when it is already clear they will not, due to chemistry or coaching, whichever one some one chooses to except, the writing is on the wall with this current roster, changes are needed. 1 RWer for Roy and Vanek? Maybe, but how about a LWer for Connolly and Pommers. Hecht has decided to show up from time to time this season, but Kovalchuk would be there night in and night out.
I don't disagree that giving up to much for a rental is not worth it, but after what I just saw, Buffalo could have formulated a deal and it wouldn't have killed us. This trade with New Jersey doesn't kill them. If Kovy doesn't resign, they will go UFA and in a year or 2 be right back at it.
We won a lottery with one team to get a first overall, I know we had that but other than that, the Sabres HAVE NEVER HAD ONE WITH POOR PLAY. The Sabres have never been bad enough to earn a top pick, Yes Vanek was a top 5 pick.
You just don't understand my reasoning then, because I agree we need a RWer to go with Vanek and Roy, I don't necessary think we need a LW to go with Connolly and Pommers, but I'd agree Sharp could do wonders with them.
The way this team is working now with Regier is to build within the draft and simple FA signings. Maybe a trade hear and there but never mortgage their future for one player who we wouldn't have been able to sign next year anyways.
Clamor all you want for a big name, we don't have the cap space nor the right formula for it. We need a few little pieces like a RW for Vanek and Roy who plays consistently. And we're golden, we don't need a Kovy type player to win games, and that has been proven this year.
I'm done trying to argue because you don't see what I'm saying, all you have done is say we need a trade for a big name player, we could have done this trade and crap.
You just blew off how Pittsburgh got Malkin, MAF, Crosby, and Staal because of how badly they sucked before the lockout and how a top 3 pick turns into something great, you ignored how Washington got Semin, Green, Ovechkin because they sucked for a long time to get top five picks years in a row and now they are paying off.

As I said in the GDT, the call on Rivet was horseshit. The Bruins player was holding onto Rivet's stick like it was the last fucking raft on the Titanic.
