My second homage to Hams beer reviews

Belhaven is a Scottish brewery most famous in the US for their beer "Wee Heavy" which can be found all over the country. They mainly stay with Scottish styles...40 shilling and 70 shilling Scottish ales.

When I first saw their twisted thistle IPA I was very intrigued.
The India Pale Ale style originated in the UK during the British colonization of India. Brit brewers discovered if they added more hops (which are a natural preservative) and more alcohol, the beer would actually survive the 6 month voyage to India around the horn of Africa.

Since then, brewers here in the US have co-opted the style and made it our own by taking the hops up another notch and using a cleaner fermenting ale yeast. So now, American and English IPA's are 2 distinct styles.
One of the things I noticed right away was this beer was brewed with American hops...definitely something outside the box for a Scottish brewery.

We've got a real Frankenstein beer here.

English style
American hops
American level of bitterness
English ale yeast
Scottish brewery

The nose is more like an English IPA with a good malt / hop balance. It's not piny or citrusy like an American IPA.
It's got a good malt backbone from the English ale yeast which doesn't attenuate as far as American yeast. That malt is needed however because the hop bitterness is right up there with any US example. It's bottle conditioned with that same English yeast (which doesn't flocculate well) so be prepared for some floaters or decant it first. Serve at cellar temperatures.

I would definitely get this one again. It's not the best IPA in the world, but it's a very unique take on the style and an interesting study on its evolution through the last 300 years.

Cross,

As a suggestion for your next review, I would be extremely interested in your analysis of New Belgium brewing CO's, Fat Tire Amber Ale. It has been a frequent occupant of my fridge for well over twenty years - we used to run down to Ft. Collins CO to get growlers filled before it was available in WY. I figure it has to be really good, as it tends to make me fart like a dog :o :o :o

You may be disappointed ;)
I will readily concede that Fat Tire is an excellent and popular beer....but...my personal opinion of it is they use too much victory/biscuit malt that gives it an aftertaste that's a bit like caramel or light chocolate...and I don't care for that aftertaste.

Of course, that's just my opinion.
I've got friends that buy the stuff by the keg and I happily drink it when it's around.
I can pick up a 6 pack and do a proper review sometime though.
I did love New Belgium's Mothership Wit

Since you mentioned your proximity to Ft. Collins though I will mention you're relatively close to one of my favorite beers.

Moose Drool by Big Sky brewing. It's perhaps the finest commercial example of an American Brown Ale that can be had.

I'd like a review of Big Easy beer, as seen in my avatar. It really exists, but I've never seen it before.

I've never seen it before either....
Looks like they only get distribution in Louisiana, Florida and Texas.

ETC or Zilla...ever seen this stuff on a shelf?

I drink Moose Drool quite frequently during the winter months - I have a hard time drinking the heavier beers when it is over 70 F, but dam fine when it is cool outside and a fat old timer needs some extra fuel for the fire!!

Saranac is a local beer for me. I think I enjoyed their IPA.
