You should see parties in the locker room after the game... :gay-umbrella:

A charged subject here. A subject that can be hard to communicate about because it makes most of us feel uncomfortable. And you can't pass it off and say "some of my friends are gay." That doesn't cover your feelings towards homosexuality. You can accept it, but still feel uncomfortable with it.

I don't believe Burke would use his son's orientation to deflect criticism of The Leafs. I believe it came to light, and instead of denying it, he acknowledged it, and it came to be news.

I think those of us who have friends or family of "alternative" orientations can empathize with this situation, through experience, more than most.

If this topic causes us discomfort, then it is a subject best left alone, at least as a topic on this board.

Maybe it's just me, but I sense a level of discomfort in this discussion; and it's not me.

Ice hockey may very well evolve into a gay sport...after all, look at field hockey.

Perhaps my difference of opinion lies in the sensationalism that has ridden on coat-tails of this story.

If anything, it serves as a distraction to this man's committment to the sport of Hockey and his dedication and passion to his craft.

Does one define themselves by their sexuality? Or the joyful work of their hands and minds, in their daily lives? Which is the more revealing of one's "soul"?

That's where I find issue with this narrative. I find that Bucci's article has surreptitiously sensationalzed that which should not be granted such a degree of undue attention.

I shall write no more, as I can put it no more plainly: If one does one's life's work with excellence and passion, all else should remain private, and should never be turned into political fodder.

Thanx. Done.

I actually posted about this in the Lounge (I made a comment that I thought it was great that, while mostly being portrayed as the intolerant parent - the father - throughout the history of coming out, Brian actually piped up about when Toronto's gay pride parade was in Toronto to Brendan) a couple of weeks ago because I knew it would catch flak in the NHL subforum.

First, Albatross that was a seriously douche move. Seriously. Like, disgusting.

Second, I agree, Dan, that one should live their life and let it be judged by the work of their hands and minds. But, as it is in any sport, your teammates are your allies, brothers and friends. These guys talk about the high and low points of life, their interests and dislikes, and everything in between. Veterans are father figures to rookies, rookies are brothers to each other, and so on. A gay man should be able to to say he's going on a date and drop a dude's name without getting ostracized, or talk about the adoption process he and his partner are going through when he's invited into a conversation about child raising by some of his teammates.

I do agree that it shouldn't be a big deal when a player, coach, or manager comes out, but because it isn't accepted (seemingly) or routine yet, it will be a big deal.

That a player is gay shouldn't mean shit in the end. Whether he's a good man, a good teammate is what should matter, but until gays feel comfortable enough to be out and proud in their dressing room with their captain, the rookies, the star goalie and the goon at the end of the row of stalls, then it's going to mean shit when one does decide to be.

I took it down because it's not relevant to this thread.

Do it again and you're out of here.
