Multiple sources are reporting Atlanta has dealt Kari Lehtonen to Dallas for Ivan Vishnevsky and a draft choice. Very Interesting....

Of course speculation is flying around like crazy now about the fate of Marty Turco. I have heard Buffalo and Chicago mentioned..

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=26178

Turco to Buffalo? And his $5.4m? I know that's not how much is remainding on the contract, but I would almost guarantee Buffalo would not got for Turco. There are other guys available for less who the Sabres would go after 1st (see Marty Biron.)

There's no way in hell Turco comes to Buffalo.

It is possible, however, that Buffalo is involved in a 3 way deal in which they'd give someone to Dallas and another team would give something to us...

Sorry guys, Millsie would not have Turco on this team.

As for this trade, I am a big Vish fan, but Lehtonen seems like he's worth way more. Maybe the pick is a 1st?

/there are no trades out there

The pick is a 4th. Lehtonen will be a RFA. I think they could have gotten more also. He was the #2 overall behind Nash. Even if he gets an offer sheet and doesn't resign with Dallas, Dallas will make out with a high pick if not more.

Turco is definitely on his way out now, I would say that Chicago, Detroit and Philly are the front runners to get him.

First of all, the Vishnevsky you are all probably thinking of, Vitaly, IS NOT the subject of this trade, IVAN Vishnevsky (he of 5 NHL TOTAL games, no goals, 2 assists and minus 1) is the player who was traded with a goddamned 4th rounder for Lehtonen. WTF is going on in the NHL right now? And can someone get Darcy on the fucking phone. We need some issues addressed on this team. AND a backup goaltender is damn near priority #1 and Dallas pretty much just stole a border line starter/SOLID backup for a couple Gatorade bottles and a bag of old pucks. Christ, it makes me think all I need is a buddy on the team and I could play GM for Atlanta.....

Oh, as an edit......going back and reading the SI.com article on this trade, I just realized that they traded a 4th rounder and a player who, and I quote, "is expected to report to AHL Chicago" for Lehtonen. So remove the Gatorade bottles, they straight traded him for a bag of used pucks......holy flying doodie what is Atlanta's GM doing?

vish is a former 1st round pick, and hes only 21. he has time to grow.

turco will not end up in detroit, not when jim howard is prying the calder out of tyler myers hands. thats gonna be a hell of a calder race!

i would have killed to have lehtonen back up miller. talk about an asset! then ship him off around draft time for a pick or something.

Thats a good trade for ATL. Lehtonen has had enough time to prove he can be their netminder. Injuries and the solid play of Pavelec made this decision easy. They got Vishnevskiy and a fourth. Finally a good trade by Waddell.

PS, Irony, Howard's having a great season but he still isn't near Myers for Calder consideration. He's slowly rising but he's not there yet. Not to take anything away from him as he's played great, but he's not the number one dman on a division leading team at 19 years of age. Instead he's a number one goalie on a middle of the pack playoff team at 25 years of age. If the vote were held today Howard might take the number 3 spot. but right now Myers and Duchene are 1 and 2.

I rank Howard past Duchene because, IMO, the reason the Red Wings are even a middle of the road playoff team this year is because Howard stepped up when Osgood started to suck butts.

All the Red Wings needed was someone to make a stop here and there. Its not like he's single-handedly taking his team into the playoffs like Mason did last year.

no, howards certainly a front runner for the calder. he is playing out of his mind. without him, the red wings are at the bottom of the pile.

Then I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Cause from what I've seen of Howard he's nothing special and is just doing the job of a regular NHL goalie, making saves when the saves need to be made.

his GAA snuck up to 2.33, but his save percentage is still a massive .926
no, hes giving the red wings solid goaltending night in and night out. hes my calder front runner right now.

Is he really considered a rookie though, I am sure he has played at least the minimum to not be considered a rookie. I could be wrong though.

I'd be surprised if Myers didn't win.

Howard has been spectacular, but he's played for several years now, and even it was only 9 games before this year, that will count against him.

Yeah, when you go look up stats on NHL.com and change the status to "rookie." He's leading every defensman in points and goals. He's leading all rookies in icetime. He also has more points than most forwards. He dictates the pace of the game. He is THE leader on this team at 19 years of age(skater, as Miller is the true leader) and honestly has been one of the best d-men in the nhl this year, period, rookie or not.

Yeah. If you consider his age, and the intangibles, it's a no brainer.
