this was not even close to beijing's opening. it only had 1/10 the budget though...it was obvious. for me, it was a forgettable experience.

Expecting any opening ceremony to match what happened in China is laughable.

Each one should be judged on it;s own merits. I thought it was very well done.

I thought it was extremely limited by being indoors. The arena looked cramped.
Scale aside, I also thought the production value was a notch down from years past.
It really didn't do much for me.

You can easily decide if something was good or bad without comparing it to something else. How do you think figure skating is judged? Each skated is judged and scored on their own performance and proficiencies.

Naa, figure skating is judged based on the size of the kickback to the French and Russian judges ;)

I really want one of those USA beanies.

Me too. I got a women's team shirt yesterday, and then I was watching the ceremonies going "shit I want one of those hats . . ." I don't see it on the website, which is good because I really DO NOT need to buy anything else!!!!

I also love their mascots . . . I seem to remember liking the ones from Beijing too.

let's put this in computer terms. if you had never experienced computers before, and someone plopped a commodore 64 down, you'd think it was the most advanced thing of all time. maybe the next day someone plops a new computer down with a terabyte hard drive, 4 GB of ram, and some new processor... all the sudden the commodore is crap. because there is a metric.

i'm not saying you have to dislike the ceremony, i just didn't. it wasn't as good as nagano, greece, torino, or beijing.

My only point is that you can analyze the ceremony without comparing it to others.

Were Nagano, Athens, Torino, and Beijing better? Comparing them to Vancouver, I think that they were.

However, I still think that Vancouver did a good job with how they wanted it to come off, and with what they had to work with.

If you try and compare every ceremony to Beijing, you'll always be disappointed.

i know beijing is an outlier, but the bar doesn't get lower as technology gets cheaper and so on and so forth.

No it's not, you're judged based off of other performances also.

If you go first you are normally not going to place really high unless you set the bar, and if you're last you also might not place very well.

It's the same with anything that gets judged, they have to base you off of previous performances and that can easily influence your scores.

It's like any talent contest or audition also.

You can analyze such a thing in two ways.

1. How did the event compare to previous events?
2. Do you think the event was done well?

They're mutually exclusive decisions. Just because Vancouver's ceremony wasn't as good as Beijing doesn't mean that one cannot say they thought the event was done well.

I did too. I'm still reeling over the Goth fiddlers doing step dance. I'm so glad I dvr'd it the 2nd time around. I've watched that segment about 10 times today, much to my families dismay :D
