The SE is full of mediocrity, so by default the extra playoff spots go to the NE or Atlantic. At least TB and Atlanta are posing a threat this season, but the East looks like a stagnant pond full of mediocrity this season. The best team has a big hole in goal, and nobody else can put a quality game on the ice on a regular basis. The WCFs will be the best show of the playoffs.
I think people give too much credit to the western conference.
What team in the west is hole less?
Lets go down the list:
San Jose - Weak at defense. Dan Boyle is talented, but after him, the Sharks are old or slow at the back end. They'll get torn up by anyone with speed, as we saw last night.
Chicago - Goaltending sucks.
Vancouver - One scoring line. Shut them down, and you can beat Luongo.
Phoenix, Los Angelas, Colorado, Nashville, Calgary... they've got all kinds of holes.
Lots of talent out there, but not ridiculously more than the East, who's top 4 teams are very strong.
Washington, New Jersey, Buffalo, Pittsburgh.
I watch a lot of center ice now that I've bought it, and I don't think the west has much of an advantage over the east.
