Hey, I'd move Rivet for a 2-for-$3.00 Original Chicken Sandwich at BK.

Frolov is a LWer, he never will play with Vanek.
If we were to land him, it would be for the Connolly-Pomminville line.

But I agree, If Rivet is moved, another D man better be comin in.

Stafford-Macarthur going somewhere for a talented defenseman perhaps?

I wonder what the Sabres blueline would look like after this season if they were to ship Rivet out.

Rivet for Frolov leaves Montador, Myers, Sekera, and Butler under contract for next season with Paetsch as an unsigned RFA.

And I would be wary of adding Frolov:

http://www.forecaster.ca/thestar/hockey/player.cgi?2179

Quote:
ASSETS: Has excellent size and reach. Can be an impact forward at both ends of the ice. Is great at maintaining possession of the puck in tight space and excels in the corners.
FLAWS: Is inconsistent in all areas of the game and needs to do a better job of bringing his 'A' game to the rink more often. Passes up too many shots.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Inconsistent two-way winger.

Do the Sabres need another inconsistent finesse offensive-minded forward?

I don't think so.

I would shit my pants if we gave up one of the few people who will stand up for their teammates for another inconsistent yet soft as mink fur player.

But I'm not a big fan of soft serve Sabres or soft serve ice cream either :o

Tell ya what, if Buffalo gets Hamhuis from Nashville, and then trades Rivet for Frolov I'd love it. Not to mention I've heard we were very, and I mean VERY close to landing Whitney on Friday, so we don't lose much veteran leadership. Making moves for future, and this season. I honestly think Frolov and Vanek would have good chemistry together, and potentially could add a unique offensive dynamic to our 1st line.

Where did you hear about Whitney? And also, who was involved? I'm not totally doubting you, but I'm really interested in that story.

Been reported from several outlets, I believe hockey news, hockey buzz (I know I know), and maybe even was mentioned on Dregers twitter, not sure. I have a friend who works for NHL network in NYC, (Phil has seen me talk to this guy) and he reported that Buffalo is very interested in Whitney, but isn't up to giving up their 1st round pick for him. They also won't trade for him UNLESS they can sign him to a 1-2 year extension right after the trade is made.

Take it for what it's worth. I'm not going to be that guy who defends all of his sources; quite frankly because I don't have any way to prove my sources.

about 90% of trade rumors are all hear say from media outlets, and people that are close to the team (local journalists, assistants in front offices, etc etc etc), so it is what it is.

Well 2/3 sources are legit, especially Dreger, he is almost always spot on. I would love to see Whitney here. That has got me really excited. :D

Whitney won't land in Buffalo unless he lowers his demands for a contract extension to waive his NTC.

There is no way the Sabres give him a 3 year deal unless he is willing to take a huge paycut.

And I can't see that being the case.

I would like an addition like Whitney up front. But, I'll be surprised if the Sabres are the ones that can land the biggest fish out there right now.

I don't think Darcy has a problem signing Whitney to a contract. He's still playing at a high level, and we'll want him for next season at least too.

I would be surprised if the Sabres were willing to commit to a 3 yr deal (especially if Whitney wants anywhere near the $3M+ per year that he makes now) to a guy who will be in his 40s when the contract enters the 3rd year.

If it's at the right price, why not?

Whitney is the type of player this team needs. They need a talented war horse, proven playoff veteran.

Without one, we don't have a shot at the cup.

we are talking about the team that gave jason pominville 5.3 mill, and hecht 3.5 mill. I wonder if we should try to free up some cap space and sign a guy like stempniak in the summer along with the competent back-up. I mean would whitney help yes but if the contract ext. is too much then bringing in a guy who would be playing for his home team might be more reasonable. Maybe now trade for a competent D-man so we have at least two. Frolov is lazy and i think the first year he came into the pro's he was playing right wing. I want to see trades that help down the road as well as now not just now.

Pretty much everyone liked the Pominville deal at the time.

He couldn't hit the broadside of a barn when letting shots go from the circles and out, but the guy is money on shootouts/breakaways. I don't know how this is, but it is. I think that is how everyone seen his signing to be a good one.

Question is though, if you move Rivet at this time of the season, who takes over as captain? I know, some will say that he isn't the leader everyone seen him as, but seriously though. In the locker room, the guys know and look to him as wearing the "C". Sure, anyone can wear a letter but the mental psyche of knowing who your captain is, can help with direction. We've seen how this team functioned with no specific captain in the past. I know, I don't wanna go back to that.

Frolov hardly is Lindy's type of player. Furthermore, he's not a Buffalo style of player. Talented, but soft, and often looks uninspired. You'd all hate him within a few weeks; especially if he didn't set the world on fire, scoring wise.

I am in favor of some change; but why the hell would you bring in more of what you already have??

Whitney, even at his age, makes more sense. However, with a defense that needs upgrading, I would be very resistant to giving up a 1'st round pick.

Lack of quality defensemen could have been addressed, as some stated, at the time of the 2008 draft, when John Carlson should have been selected.

I have to agree I would be very resistant to giving up a 1st round pick as well. This team doesn't really have many great prospects in the system at all. Ennis, Adam, Kassian, Enroth and Weber and that's about it. All others are years away if they can even make it. And Weber being your best defensive prospect in the minors isn't enough. He's going to be an okay defenseman but not great. In the Eastern Conference where you face off against Ovechkin and Crosby it would be nice to shore up the defense in the future. Sad thing is this team really needs a really talented forward to the current squad and another solid defenseman so it should be interesting if this team makes any trades at the deadline.

I want Ray Whitney. I don't care what anybody says about him.

He's exactly what this team needs.
