VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — One way or another, it's going to be Miller Time at the Vancouver Olympics for the U.S. men's hockey team.

Starting goalie Ryan Miller said Monday he's been told the mask he designed for the Winter Games doesn't conform to Olympic standards. The tag line "Miller Time" is printed on the mask, and a beer maker's slogan is deemed unacceptable.

Miller shrugs that one off but he is more upset that officials are also taking issue with the words "Matt Man" as part of the design. That's a tribute to Miller's cousin, Matt Schoals, who died of cancer in 2007.

Miller intends to contest the ruling, as the U.S. prepares to open against Switzerland on Tuesday.

How stupid...I guess I can understand them wanting to remove "Miller Time" (Quick's mask also is under scrunity because it says "Support Our Troops" on the back), but I don't see why a tribute to a family member who died is against the rules.

its a cool design, but i hate backplates that dont have exposed harnesses (im a goalie. i notice crap like that)

of course, the USA michigan logo is pure AWESOME. i wonder where i can obtain one for my backplate. i also like his old tribute to matt, the bulldog with the spartan shirt on. that was my favourite.

His Sabres mask still has the bulldog...he also recently (can't remember if it was last season or the previous one before that) added his Steadfast Foundation logo to the back as well.

I think he'll win his contestation (Firefox says that's not a word; I'm 100% sure Firefox is wrong). It's not an advertisement or anything close to an official logo.

If he doesn't, then.... :?

Yeah, I just don't see why it's against the rules in the first place?

Well, he mentioned that they probably disallowed it because they think it's an advertisement of some sort. I didn't read the article you posted because I'd already read another on it lol, so I don't know if that one mentions it, but the one I read did.

When has the IOC been particularly fond of Americans?

This has to be a ploy to try to rattle him to knock him off his game.

I understand the IOC is against sponsorships and branding and what not, but seriously? I can understand the, "Miller Time" slogan being somewhat of an issue to an extent. With this, he’s kind of a victim of coincidence of sorts as having the same name as a frosty beverage. But for the IOC to have a problem with his tribute to his cousin is pretty fucking lame if you ask me. Looking at this, I'm shocked that they haven't said the same thing about Luongo's mask. He has Johnny Canuck on the top of it and that is an official logo of the Vancouver Canucks effective this season. The IOC must really have a lot of time on their hands if they’re going to stoop this low. Let them play fucking hockey for Christ sakes. It’s why they’re there!

I hope Miller wins the argument.

That is the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard in my life.

It's Miller Time because it's Ryan Miller time, not because it's time for a shitty beer that tastes like burnt hair.

Conspiracy theories much?

The IOC has a long history of objecting to anything remotely resembling a commercial interest which they don't have a piece of. This is just another example of this.

'Miller Time' will probably have to go. 'Matt Man' will probably get cleared.

EDIT: I'm surprised by the blatant ignorance on the Reuters site. First, they say 'Matt Man' is a tribute to a dead friend. HOW ABOUT FAMILY MEMBER??? Way to do your homework on that one.

Then, this gem in the comments section:

Quote:
I agree with the IOC’s decision. The Miller Time slogan is just blatant advertizing pure and simple.

REALLY? The fact that the guy's last name is 'Miller' has NOTHING to do with it.....

Idiots...

I don't think its an attempt to knock him off his game, just another example of do everything you can to screw the Americans.

Not buying that.

The IOC has made athletes from many countries cover up unapproved logos that could be construed as non-sanctioned advertisements, or anything resembling a political statement. Most of their decisions have been seen as bullshit, but they've done it pretty uniformly to plenty of countries.

As far as the "Miller time" goes...well, not to be a total ass, but I HOPE he has to cover it up. I've always disliked it there, mainly because miller is such a completely shiza beer. Quite frankly i'm surprised he even tried to have it put on his mask for the olympics, I'm no olympic athlete but i'm at least peripherally aware that they have a serious hard-on for not allowing anything resembling advertising to be on a players equipment.
