I think most presidents would like to possess dictatorial power - at least to some degree. Obama is no exception.

My point is that although I didn't agree with many of Bush's decisions, I gave him the respect of not referring to him as a pansy. I think that this president deserves the same respect, but if you want to insult the guy, that's your prerogative.

Did Bush ever give any excuse to call him a pansy?
And while you may have refrained from insulting Bush, you're in the extreme minority.

Um...the Dalai Lama doesn't get mad. He's always happy.

God damnit....you want outrage?

Here it goes:
Quote:
In a statement the White House said that Mr. Obama had expressed support for the preservation of Tibet’s “unique religious, cultural and linguistic identity and the protection of human rights for Tibetans in the People’s Republic of China.

What part of occupied, oppressed, murdered and exiled does this asshole not understand?

What's next? Obama is going to announce that Taiwan has a unique cultural and religious identity that needs to be preserved in the People’s Republic of China.

Just to play devil's advocate here, what would it achieve for the oppressed, murdered people of Tibet if Obama met him in the grand ballroom? Apparently the meeting Bush had with him publicly didn't do a hell of a lot for them, did it? Maybe if you keep China somewhat pleased, they will return the favor graciously someday. Obama is trying a different strategy of foreign politics is all. May or may not be better, but it is different(change). The days of vilifying communism are over, and the people of China are coming around too.

I'm glad Obama is a strong willed man(as ETC said), because he's getting jumped for everything. If he were a weak guy, he wouldn't survive it, and that would be bad for everyone.

On a personal note, this isn't a big story, sounds like it was made to be though. slow news day?

Yeah actually it did if you recall the 2008 Olympics. Tibetan monks protested in the largest numbers in 20 years when the world visited China. They got smacked around for it too.
You know, the usual stuff...Monasteries under military siege, gunfire and teargas.
Before the games, Bush said he "encouraged the Chinese government to engage in substantive dialogue with the Dalai Lama's representatives,".

You don't know much about the Chinese.

Obama failed to side with freedom from oppression in Iran and he's failing to side with it in Tibet.

Bush did expand their exposure, and that was certainly a good thing. Even a dumb president can do things like that. I'll never get on Bush as being an awful person, he was just a shit president(same thing a republican would say about Jimmy Carter more/less).[/quote]

After learning more about Bush's past, I felt bad for the guy.

At the same time, it made me feel sick about this country's decision making.

The options were Bush v. Gore and Bush v. Kerry. As flawed as Bush may have been, America got it right both times.

America didn't get Bush v. Gore right. The Supreme Court decided it.

In this day and age of technology, we spent weeks looking at 'hanging chads', and trying to gauge 'voter intent' on paper ballots that are more confusing than some tax forms. Why we can't get it right is beyond me.

We're still beating the dead horse of "Gore was elected, Bush was selected"? AAAAAAGGHH!!! Forget the chad, I think I want to hang myself!

I'm not totally displeased with the outcome;Gore was not an appealing candidate for me. I'm displeased with the process of what happened. People's votes in Florida did not get counted because of the decision to stop the recounts. That's all that bothers me.

Look at Minnesota. They knew how to get a recount done.

I honestly don't understand why the form is confusing; how fucking hard is it? And "hanging chad". That means a hole was PUNCHED. Count and move the fuck on, who cares if it's not completely punched, so long as there isn't another hole on the same line.

This was the infamous 'butterfly ballot' from Palm Beach County.

Image

Punch the hole next the arrow for the candidate you want. Makes sense if you look at it for a minute, but it's neither simple of intuitive.

Maybe I'm spoiled here in NY. I love our lever machines. Find the candidate you want, flip the lever. A RED ARROW points at the candidate you voted for, so there is no confusion. Change as much as you want, everything gets recorded when you flip the lever to walk out.

I'm for ballots being SIMPLER. Make it easy for people to walk in, place their votes knowing who they voted for, and leave. Have defined recount processes that make sense if that's needed. Don't let lawyers dictate that because a hole wasn't punched all the way through a vote shouldn't count.

Some people don't vote because the process is made too confusing or difficult. That needs to change.

Yeah, unfortunately, a lot of people use "I want to sit and have a beer with him more," as a basis for voting.

I never understood when people say they want the candidate that's more like "just a normal american." Screw that, the average american is an idiot. I want the really smart guy running the country.

Me too. What I don't want is the fuck that spent every minute after graduating in politics though - that individual is detached from reality. Candidates are groomed from the fucking outset.

Oh not this crap again....

Listen...the New York Times went down there and counted ALL the ballots and Bush would have won anyway

http://www.nytimes.com/2001/11/12/politics/12VOTE.html

So let it go already.

For fuck's sake....

I wasn't disputing the outcome. I was complaining about the process.

The Dalai Lama leaving the White House yesterday...out the back door...past the damn garbage cans.

I'm embarrassed as an American to see this picture.
